My theory is a leak in the fuel system somewhere above the 1/2 tank lvl lets air in causing the stoppage. The long cranking on re-start is pro'ly the fuel pump re-priming the system. See if you can can turn the the key on, but not crank and hear the fuel pump running, it should then shut off when the system is pressurised and you should be able to start without the prolonged cranking. Alternatively the pump is weak and copes with the assistance of full tank head pressure but struggles without it, and the prolonged cranking may possibly allow the cam driven injectors to assist by siphoning fuel.
