I had a set of tyres with cracks like that on the van (not Khumo) and blew 2 of them in 150km, I replaced them with a new set of Mickey Thompson AT's.
I have never used Khumo tyres so i don't have any opinion on the brand But i do know that cracks like yours are pretty terminal.
For sure. I had a crack years ago on a boat trailer and it blew. I wouldn't drive on the tyres as shown! Well...not over 50kph. Cheers
Yeh ok trout,jeepers there's a lot of cracking on 3 and less on 4th, I did love the performance of the tread in all applications but am a bit out out by sidewalls.
I have to put kumho back on for warranty and will go the at51 see how that goes.
You might have been sold some Old stock and thats why they were cracked/perished, the cracked tyres on the van were 10 years old.
Just picked up this thread and have to comment re my Khumo tyres which would be around 6 years old now and have given bloody good service.
I bought 6x Khumo LT265/75/R16 for our RRC with 2" lift and put them on some Disco rims from the Jordan Rovatech guys in Bentley (Perth - Kevin). They were $250 each around 2013.
Before the Khumos, the RRC was wearing totally ridiculous (in my mind) Maxxis Bighorn mud tyres that were of zero value anywhere I drive - noisy at speed, shovels in the sand, handled terribly etc. Okay on rocks but not important enough to put up with the rest of their annoyances. Not everyone agrees with me on that though as someone bought them for $200 each on black sunraysia style rims. Probably for a Patrol.
The car has done only 45000k since putting them on and the tyres are no where near needing replacing. Mostly off road coastal/beach and gravel tracks - rock climbing. They would be fairly hard now which probably forms part of the reason for good ks, and the 2 extras I bought for spares have never been needed so they're both still 100% tread.
I would buy these again in a wink given how they have lasted, price and strength. Remind me of tyres of old like the Olympic Steelflex I used to run on my HK/T utes which seemed to last for ever. Have also run KL21 Khumos on our XC90 - city, highway and gravel (to get to the RRC) and now Khumo Crugen for same car. Also good.
I would expect everyone in this forum would be specifying "LT" build for any tyres they buy for 4WD? Maybe the failures are happening on standard wall Khumo tyres?

I chose today as the time for the next 5 wheel rotation on the D2.... I have now had my Kuhmo MT51’s fitted for 14 months, and they’ve since done 42000km with no real appreciable wear. Actually I’ve been in every way happy with these tyres until today when I noticed cracks alongside the sidewall shoulder lugs on one of the four road wheels. The other three are starting to develop cracks however the spare shows no outward signs of cracking yet ... time will tell. I’ll be going back to the tyre fitter this week to have a chat!Quote:

First up, I contacted Khumo and they said that they’re aware of the problem. They call it “torque cracking” adding that it is cosmetic and that it doesn’t compromise tyre safety. However, the sidewall rubber compound has apparently been altered to deal with the issue and they offer a pro rata replacement warranty for affected tyres. The next step is off to the tyre fitter to to get them assessed. More soon🤞🏽
