Upgrading Options for D2 auto box (ZF 4HP22e)

There have been a number of threads on fitting 24 internals to the 4HP 22 auto box, or replacing it completely with a 4HP24.

I just recalled a conversation of a couple of years ago with Blknight (Dave) where he intimated that although he hadn't tested it, it might be possible to further strengthen at least the 24 box by fitting the 26 front end (ex D3?) and I assume get stronger front bearings? This cogitation was unfortunately just after the 24 box in the LSE had only just been completely rebuilt, or else I would have followed it up then.

Anyone investigated or tried this possibility, or have any comments?

I suspect at 260K in the D2, I'm in the bonus part of the life of my 22 box and I'm thinking ahead/trying to budget/looking at transmission options over and above an Ashcroft centre diff to complement my pair of trutracs.

    Cheers all. Gavin

Isn't that one of those manual thingies?

I have grown very comfortable with my autos, despite doing my early LR driving in series 1 and 2

It's the only way I'll get a HSE with SLS 7 seats and ACE with a manual. Just change the settings with a nanocom, install a clutch, bell housing master and slave cylinders and change the centre console.
    Piece of cake.

Lol. Pedal box as well. Flywheel. The best way to do a conversion like that ( I have done it a few times on other cars ) is to have a donor car alongside. That way you have everything you need, which will be more than you think.

Don't get me wrong, I've thought about it many times in my ongoing saga.

I'm not so sure about the piece of cake part...
Sure, sourcing a TD5 spec R380 box, a replacement flywheel, clutch kit and clutch hydraulics aren't too big a deal.
But, what's involved in adding the clutch pedal - does the dash need to come out to change the pedal box?
Then there's the interior trim pieces - with so few manual models, what's the chance of sourcing a good condition matching replacement centre console?
Then there is the ECU side. There is a difference between manual and automatic ECU's but I believe you are correct that the auto can be changed to a manual as it has extra bits inside. But if you've got a tune then it will probably need to be changed to suit.
Also, do Australian spec manual TD5's use a gearbox oil cooler? If so, that's another expense and installation hassle...

So, do I assume there isn't anyone out there (possibly apart from Ask Orto) who can comment on the original post question ie

as the 24's only came out in RR's Gav,, will you need some form of box controller?
