    V8 D2 without oil cooler

My noisey low comp 4.0L 99 D2 has an oil cooler.

IIRC some vehicles (D2a?) were delivered without the cooler.

With 82 degree thermostat, my engine always runs below 90C, down to 82C on the overrun.

I have a high comp 4.0L in the shed that I might put in it. I don’t know if the fuel and ignition maps differ for high and low comp engines but I’ll run it on the existing map anyway. I’m guessing it might run hotter (too much advance?). That might be ok by me as water temp is not hot enough for cabin heater to function properly at present.

Anyway, the oil cooler inlet/outlet ports have been blocked on this engine with chemweld or similar. I’ll try to clean that up and block off with threaded plugs instead.

What do vehicles delivered without an oil cooler have here? Surely not different timing covers?

Wow that's a long oil filter!. Is that a Z9 or similar. Be careful with long oil filters If I recall correctly not a good idea as on extreme articulation they can be hit. The correct oil filters are shorter.

Yeah that was on the engine when I pulled it out of the donor vehicle. That and the chemweld contribute to the short odds I give this motor of blowing up quickly. History is questionable at best!

People often try to save a penny and use Z9s when in fact the correct filter is not that dear

Good practice to fit an oil temp gauge as well if running one of those.

So Pedro/Craig, where is the best place to fit it within the lines, remembering Pedro has a V8? from memory, and me a pair of oilburners?

Ironically, I could not buy one when checking some time ago, and the first link I found today was in Perth.

Yep d2a deleted it for Aus based on the V8's I have seen. I like it but it's all extra costs on the assembly line. Cheers

In your case probably half way along the td5 engine block / sump ,between the 2 clamps which is also where the lines run together for the transmission .
Pedro wants to use it for engine oil cooler on the V8, I assume.

Thanks Craig. So is this on the return line, or as the hotter ATF initially leaves the transmission for in my case en route to the front mounted oil cooler?

Rain just arrived in Freo 10 minutes ago and belting down.

    Cheers Gavin
