NEW TO AUTO'S. DOWNSHIFTING FROM LOCK ???

    hi folks .
    rebuilt td5 with auto. 1999.
as above, i'm new to auto boxes.
    so, cruising along at 90k's.
    box locked in.
2100 rpm approx. start to climb a hill. temp starting to rise as locked box tries to maintain speed.
what is the correct sequence to change from locked to 3rd gear ???
    thanks in advance.
    gofer :-)
box has only 40k's on it, so i don't want to kill it just yet :-)

Let the box look after itself. If temps are rising enough for concern, lift the right foot.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I would say, quick pedal to floor and it will kick down, then ease off to the speed and temperature you are happy with.

OR manually shift to 3 on the tbar, and it will change to unlock 3 then to lock 3 in about 1-2 seconds..
    Regards Philip A

What exactly do you mean? It won't kickdown or you have just it in 4?
It's a transmission just flick it down no need to stop accelerating.
I have the v8 and it will kickdown from 90 if I want it to. Up at 100 it won't though I have to flick it down.
I have had it screaming it's tits off up hill in 3rd for periods of time and have never seen the gauge rise above half even with 2t worth of trailer and leaky trans. (Hope my gauge isn't faulty)
I'm pretty sure the diesels run warmer than the petrol but I've never owned one someone else will confirm.
Going up hill speed is gone in the v8 in 4th I just wear it and go slow.
Check your coolant and like v8lan said lift your right foot if it's a concern.

Hope you work something out that would do my nuts in warming up so easily.

    Cheers!

"temp starting to rise" what temp are you talking about? If it's the standard gauge you have a problem. Change as Phillip A says preferably pull back on the 'T' Bar before you start going up the hill so that you are in third lockup when you do climb.

If you can provide a little more info as requested by others we’ll be able to offer better advice?

Rebuilt TD5? Is this complete engine overhaul?
    Remapped? Standard turbo?
Auto? Was it just a standard reco? Or upgraded TC?

    FYI
The standard disco temp gauge will sit half way until it’s too late!! not 100% on the exact temp it will go into over temp?

Do you have a secondary temp gauge? What’s the actual temp readings?

    Cheers Lemo

as above, i'm new to auto's.
i was under the impression that the box " locked up " only in drive position.
box locks in drive when speed is around 85kph, then the revs drop back to around 2000rpm.
regards temp:- using nanocom it sits around 88-90c when on the flat doing around 90k's.
the area where i live is around daylesford in vic. flat stretches with loads of steep hills.
at present i just lift the pedal off, shift lever into 3rd. box changes . i then push the pedal gradually.
    thanks for the input. :-)
i'd rather get the answer here, than try when towing a trailer up a hill.

Those temps are normal, what are you getting when climbing?

There’s a few post on the forum about auto operation etc
If you’re on the web based forum use the search function at the bottom it’ll produce loads of info!

RAVE will also give the complete operation of the box as wellNEW TO AUTO'S. DOWNSHIFTING FROM LOCK ???
