D2 V8 Auto making a worrying transmission noise

I have a 2003 D2 V8 Auto with 158,000Kms on the clock which over the past couple of weeks has been making a noise which is something like a cross between a rattle and a fluttering as I accelerate from either a stop or from very low speed. It doesn't seem to happen for the first few minutes from cold and I can affect the noise by either accelerating very slowly, which doesn't cause it or accelerating harder making the noise more insistent. It only happens up to about 40-50Kph not higher and seems to come from somewhere in front and to the left of the driver so in the general transmission area. Going into neutral and revving the engine doesn't produce the noise so I can't use an assistant and see if I can better locate the source.

My suspicion is that its auto-box generated but the question is it something I should worry about urgently and what should I take a look at?

Also, I've noticed that the auto won't go into direct drive for the first 5-6kms first thing in the morning - I've put this down to the box being cold (its been below zero most nights recently in Canberra) and that the Disco has been out on the drive all night. Once there's a bit of warmth in there it's working as normal. Is this normal (it spent the last couple of winters in a garage overnight)?

Any advice or pointers gratefully received ...

The auto will not lock up until the temperature of the engine shows on the gauge as midway. ( whoops that is TD5 but probably same with V8)

I would think rattles are more likely to be related to the handbrake , engine mounts , or mufflers or cats. it could be acracked flexplate but the other things are more common. To test the handbrake drive along with the engine at 2100RPM and then partly pull on the handbrake. If the rattle stops that is your answer. That is the most common cause. (again TD5 but not as common on v8)

I've had a really annoying rattle I've gotta give that a crack! I wasn't even gonna ask because how the hell is anyone gonna guess where a rattle is coming from on a land rover.

Have you check the fluid level? Same thing my old commo done, needed to warm up and then wouldn't shift out of 1st for like 500mtrs.

    Cheers mate

Rattle probably a heat sheild on a catalytic converter.

Fill tranny with fluid. Should shift to drive within a km. If not, problem will likely worsen. 250,000km seems about par for these boxes behind a V8.

I had a rattle like yours and it turned out to be a loose output shaft from the transfer case.
