Hmm, might've been?
It was the mid eighties, I can't even remember if the windscreen bolts were torx, I think they might've been.

Ah!
head bolts on a TD5 are wayyy beyond my pay grade, as of current.
But when it happens to brother's TD5, I'll give him the heads up that he needs to buy more tools! [biggrin]
That is where people go wrong. It is flawed practise, and always will be. Brake cylinder caps have been designed that way since the HK Holden. Leave it alone. I repeat, My D2 does not "fault" on a low fluid level, and neither should yours. I had a strange thing happen in the last week. My late wife's Ford, which I am driving, got down to a brake fluid level I don't like. However, it was not critical, but I decided to do the pads anyway. Strangely, the pads were EXACTLY as I had imagined. Maybe 15%. Maybe 20%. I changed them. One thing: The light DID NOT COME ONE ONCE. Learn how the system works.
Lotsa people here want to believe that they are smarter than others. They are entitled to that opinion, of course they are. But if they want to attack someone else, then they have to PROVE it.
No personal attacks, if you can. I did NOT attack anyone. I have always seen muppet as a term of silly endearment. I don't care what means anyone else uses to attack me, as that is their loss.
Having a low level in your brake reservoir is not a good thing and simply ignoring it is reckless and to promote ignoring a low level in a brake reservoir is even more reckless.
It is not always worn pads that causes fluid loss and topping up the fluid does No harm whatsoever.
Is this thread still going? Keep the fluid above min and below max. Christ almighty guys move on to next thing

I'm thinking part of the issue on why the thread is still going may be related to people's perception of what 'low level' means.
I do exactly as you're recommendation, which I assume is also what John refers too.
ie. for the past 6 months my brake fluid reservoir has been sitting on the seam line, which is about half way between high and low.
Brake pads are being looked into .. (ie. to get a good set that doesn't just cost a million bucks) Pad thickness has been checked at least twice that I remember, just in the past week.
And I'm sure I'd have checked them about 6 months ago too .. when I did my last oil change.
Hopefully the next thing won't cause so much animosity over a simple personal preference.
