Can I ask what grease you used?
And I'd drop the shaft to grease it too until i twigged it was quicker and easier to pull the floor in the Deefer. [emoji23]
Well today I had the time and space to get the front prop shaft out. Ended up rounding off one nut at the transfer box end so in a fit of pique I made life harder for myself by taking to it with an angle grinder. Now I have to wrestle with that bloody big circlip to replace the bolt. May as well replace all eight while I'm at it I guess.
The good news is that all three UJ's are good with no play at all. The bad news is that the ball joint is shot. Properly shot to bits. The grease "nipple" for want of a better word has come out some time in the last 2500km's closely followed I would suggest by the grease. At this point I reckon I'll get another TW shaft and add that nipple thing to my list of things to check. In the past I've just squirted a load of grease in there without checking. Once bitten twice shy. Nipple checks are the go from here on...[bigsmile1] Anyway here's a short video of the play in the ball joint. YouTube
My thoughts are that its actually failure of the centre bearing that causes the failure of the UJ's in standard shafts, but the UJ's are what gets blamed almost all of the time. I think with the 1310's, there is enough strength for the centre bearing to fail but for the UJ's to stay together generally. Good catch. I also think its the servicable centre bearing that makes the TW's stand out now.
I have lost the little plastic adapter that Tom sent with the shaft for greasing the ball. Has anyone found an off tbe shelf solution in Aus? Cheers
Yep. Supercheap has this Grease Gun Accessory Kit - 7 Piece | Supercheap Auto
What does Toms adaptor look like?
I have a MacNaught gun and use one of their needle adapters, it works well and much better than Tom's cheap plastic one.
