    Heavy duty axles

Hi all. My rear diff and axles are at 300,000 plus with a lot of offroading and towing. Looking at some preventive maintenance soon I think. Front diff original. My mate has Ashcroft axles and ATBs front and rear. He hasn't stressed them yet.

I see HiTuff also do HD axles and CVS.

Can anyone share experiences with various brands, fitting and costs?

I am in 2 minds about things but I will prob go locker in rear and ATB in front with HD axles/CVs all round.

    Cheers

I think I paid about 4grand for jack macnamara diff centers and Ashcroft axles and CVS, fitting was good I did mine in my shed, and had a mate set back lash once centers were fitted up, I wanted lockers but cathe expense was a bit much so I went jm centers as they appear strong as buggery.

its dead easy to set a rover diff up , Id be putting a TrueTrac or ATB in the rear of anything with TractionControl, ATB & TC are a perfect match and a lot easier on half shafts than a Detroit locker or Full Diff Lock.

Thanks mate. Yes I know what your saying, although in the rear and with HD axles it would probably make no difference in terms of longevity of axles Im thinking. I think the ATB's are excellent but at the same time their true capacity is brought out by traction control and whilst my ABS has been very reliable I do like the idea of redundancy (left foot braking just isn't the same). I also think that in some situations the locker might be a tiny bit better. For the front though it would be ATB most likely and I would put HD half-shafts with CV's in anyway as I am sick of hearing clicky CV's. I am still uncertain as for most of my driving the ETC has been excellent and ETC and ATB is an even better weapon - AND you get better tracking, better braking and possibly better high speed dirt handling and when towing a boat on corrugated dirt roads is always a good thing. Decisions decisions.

    Cheers

I have the Ashcroft CVs in the front with the truetrac diff in the front been in there for 15 years maybe longer never had a problem and been chipped for as long, broke 2 standard CVs in short order. fitted a Detroit locker in the rear at same time had to replace rear axle about 5 years ago after one broke bought the macnamara ones that were sitting on the shelf for years at a landy workshop north of Brisbane, they seemed surprised that I broke the a rear axle.

Have fitted a truetrac from ashcrofts in my transfer case that has been in there for 3 years now.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

And the beauty of HD CV's in the D2 is that they are bigger and stronger than you can squeeze into a Deefer/RRC/D1 swivel housing.
