    D2 TD5 Bush Fuel Economy

    Info for what its worth.
    I usually work on 15L/100km for planning any bush or moderate towing trips, and some recent stats added below.

    Back from a trip to east of Laverton with a couple of LR WA Club member vehicles to do Hanns Track. Had a 1/2 width roof basket with 3 fuel containers on the roof, plus a side awning to increase wind resistance. Just me, no passenger/s.

    Overall economy was 12.085L/100km, which I thought was pretty good as my whole of ownership consumption over almost 7 years has been 12.31, although that does include a pre-mods component, and a major proportion of urban travel.

    The heaviest fuel usage section was leaving Laverton to Tjukayiria (308km on the very nice Great Central Road) at 100kmph and 13.68L/100km.

    Gravel circuit east of Laverton overall was 13.27L/100 km over 1,217 km, which included everything from 5 - 100 kmph travel (the actual Hann track component was quite overgrown, mostly sand plain country with occasional stone ridges etc and lots of twists and turns.

    So, fuel usage in the bush didn't increase all that much over standard - I had higher consumption when doing the southern part of the Canning Stock Route last year, but then being 2 up, heavier loaded and more roof rack wind resistance. Just rechecked my figures and the actual on CSR part Wiluna to Well 33 was 16.6L/100km, but also pushing it a bit at times to try and keep up with some maniacal trip attendees.

    Useful info Gavin and that's similar, though slightly better, to my figures through central Australia last year.

    In 6 years of ownership my average is 12.7 L/100km overall including a reasonable towing component.

    The TD5 was always pretty good on fuel,although no where near as good as the 300TDi.

    In fact,my last TD5 was better on fuel than out current D4.
    But comparing the two vehicles is like comparing apples and oranges.....

    At a club economy run years ago the most economical vehicle was a td5 manual d2 at just over 8/100 for the day.

    I average mid to high 13's on daily commutes including highway and town driving. Working through the bush in low range my fuel economy significantly improves over this, closer to the great Td5 fuel economy that others talk about on here...

    Did they do it 'scientifically' or just the good 'ol take the odometer reading method.
    From what I've noticed odometers vary wildly enough to make more than enough difference.

    On a day trip a long while back, my brother drive my dads(then) Ford Explorer.
    Dad used to 'brag' how he gets about 7km/lt in his 4Lt V6 Exploder basically around town, but outer suburban(actually just past where you live).

    But on this day trip with the brother, me in my D1, turned out that on the 87km loop we did to Mt Disappointment and back I did 87km, the Exploder did 98km!
    I know my odo is about 7% less(ie. I do less shown that actual), and that the Exploder must have done an appropriate similar percentage more.
    I'd never got to double check it other than this one drive in unison with my D1.

    So .. my dads 7km/lt(or 14.3l/100) is more like 6.5km/lt(15.4lt/100)

    To me, that's more than enough difference to be a difference.

    ps. I run 255/70's on my supposedly std 235/70's(how the car came). Strangely tho, the speedo is pretty much spot on!
    But as I had my suspicions about my dads 'fuel economy' details .. not really quite what they were showing.
    Thankfully tho, the Exploder has now gone to god(and I heard he was furious about it too! ) and dads Pug does more like 20km/lt now!

    My Tdi is averaging about 9.8km/lt over the 50K klms I've now done on it.

    It was done scientifically , filled up at same pump before and after.
