Put the battery in the back cubby box hole as I have done and many other people, no heat and better access for accessories
Hi All,
I've read a few past threads about mounting a second battery in the vacant tray on the chassis rail of a D2.
Just wondering if anyone has done this could let me know what battery they used? I've only got 170mm from the tray bottom to the floor which rules out pretty much all deep cycles I've come across (mostly 200mm plus to top of terminals).
I've been investigating other avenues but not really keen on carrying my existing calcium battery in the car or next to the turbo.
Cheers James

I had a Remco 80Ah AGM on its side in the tray for a couple of years before moving the battery to a D4.

I think the idea is that you get a totally sealed unit(like an AGM) and mount it on it's side in the compressor area.
I highly recommend the dual battery tray replacement for the original battery location tho.
Look for a thread by Jazzman who's getting some made up.
I made a dual battery bracket for brother's D2 just prior to Jazzman taking up the challenge, and it's not hard to do with some amateur workshop tools(ie. welder/grinder/etc).

I saw a guy in Birdsville years ago with a battery in the SLS air compresser tray.
He had a battery on its side and it had been there for quite a few years with no issues at all.
The other location some used was rear of left side of engine bay,but it is way too hot,as its close to the turbo.
i always had a battery box in the rear of my D2's,as there was only two of us,and we always had a heap of room, particularly with the rear seats out.
Hey Scarry!
just an odd question
did you pre-order it like the D3/4's ?
or just walk onto the lot?

Its a long story.
I wanted to trade an '02,as the dealers mechanics(under warranty) hadn't done it any favours, don't ask
We didn't trust the vehicle anymore, particularly for remote are travel.
And i knew a new model(D3) was just around the corner and i didn't want the first of any model, and i knew it was highly complicated compared with the D2.
So i got a change over price for one from the dealers here,i thought it was too high.
We went to another dealer, that we had never used before, and the change over price was around 5K less, and it was in stock,so we took it.
I wanted a 5 seater as the kids had flown the coop, and less things to fail as we were doing a lot of remote travel at the time.
SWMBO liked the colour,i didn't,but being gold it didn't show the dirt,so all good.
In fact it was one of the best vehicles i have ever owned, did thousands of k's in very rough remote areas, fully loaded, all around the countryside, and never missed a beat.
The D4 we have now was the same, fortunately they had what we wanted in stock. We knew what we wanted and rang around the dealers.
Hi jjperko, I considered this too for a while, but decided to build the battery box. If you find my post in the group buy section of the forum you'll noticed the timeline has expired, however don't let that stop you from contacting me if you want one because that was the first batch of many. In fact if you want one and let me know by Friday I maybe be able to get one to you anyway.
