    Discovery 2 TD5...Performance issues...

    Hi again,

I am writing for some advice regarding my 2001 TD5 Auto with 310km and its performance...or lack there of at times.

My issue is that when taking off from a standing start, the car doesn't want to do anything. I mean, it moves forward but you can actively count out the seconds before the turbo kicks in and then it starts moving with some gusto. It doesn't really want to do anything until about 1900 RPM.

The issue is more so when the car is not fully warmed up but does also do it when up to operating temperature.

I have recently replaced the whole turbo unit as well as the MAF sensor with little avail. The turbo certainly pulls a bit harder in the mid range about 2500-3000 RPM but that's it.

I'm ok with it because it has been this way for as long as I can remember but poses a safety issue for those who drive the car but not as regularly as myself and whom understands it's 'quirks' if you will.

I also understand that it might just be a TD5 thing as they are not power houses but still.

Just putting it forward, I'm not interested in tuning it as for my applications, it doesn't require it.

Any ideas and information would be greatly appreciated by those more 'accustomed'.

    Thank you very much.

    Following with interest.

Have you tested the boost modulator? And what condition are all the vacuum lines in?

I think I was chasing a similar problem until I got frustrated and decided to let future me deal with it. I experienced what you described when I switch the ignition on and drive. I specify this as, from a stand still at the lights, I feel it pulls well from get go however if I were to pull over and switch it off then back on, I can count the seconds before the turbo kicks in as well.

Boost modulator was removed and inspected when the new turbo was installed.

Same for the turbo lines to the intercooler and intake manifold.

    Same for the vacuum lines.

    Nil defects present.

So it leads me to believe they are still in a serviceable condition.

Seems to be running as designed. Pedro will be sniggering about now.

Should I change my name to Inline5Ian? It seems to lack the same ring.

its a turbo diesel they need boost move, if you want more low down fit a Variable vane turbo so the turbo will spool sooner.

Try disconnecting the boost modulator completely. They are designed to "smooth" things out for the autos, manual Deefers don't have them.
Even with a split hose to the intercooler, mine was no worse on acceleration than the 300 Tdi in my D1.

The real thing would be to save a live data log with nanocom to see all sensor's inputs... untill then inspect the MAP sensor to not be gunked up especially if the EGR is still there... and check fuse F2 in the engine bay fusebox to make sure it's not blown
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
