As a follow up- the car has been fine driving around town, but took a drive to Byron last night. Definitely noticed a lack of torque when accelerating past 90km (2500rpm). On moderate hills, the car wouldn’t hold 110km (would drop to 100 or just below). I run a boost gauge and notice that pre-snorkel, boost would easily hit 18psi and would ‘bounce’ as boost modulator did its thing. Now it only just makes it to 18psi and if the modulator does drop the pressure, it sits at about 17psi max. I also find if I accelerate hard from 90 (4th gear lockout), the car used to pick up speed pretty quick to 110km. It now throws back to 3rd and revs to hell out of the car.
The supplier has given me some measurements from another snorkel, so I may pull it off and do some measurements just to make sure mine isn’t faulty. I’ll also run the car without the snorkel just to make sure there isn’t another problem with my car.
Overall, it’s a bit frustrating. The car still drives fine in normal driving conditions. I’m reluctant to start chopping the snorkel outlet up etc to gain more airflow.
Will update once I know more.
Again, these posts are so people can get a first hand review. Thanks.

    Cheers, Josh

Mine Has "Discovery" in raised letters on the side but otherwise looks identical. It also fits identically and was a bit behind the A pillar. I just forced it in as over time it will relax into the new position.
Have had it on 5 years with no problems.
I cut the slots further up.
I also cut out the twirler in the air cleaner.
I have no performance problems and EGTs are my limitation and about 22Lb max boost.( parameters altered by Offtrack)
The burper is meant to be cracked open with no vacuum. I just bought a new one and it is ajar. I figure that it closes with some vacuum in the air filter. Clever eh!
Perhaps you left a rag in it if you are having performance problems (LOL)

PS I know that one UK tune rewriter will not do a stage 3 on vehicles with snorkles. I was tossing up whether to get another filter base and cut some holes in it for on road work. I haven't tried it yet as to get cool air you would also have to cut holes in the panel behind the headlight. I did that with my RRC and made a fiberglass intake to match, but didn't notice any difference.

When i made mine i was very worried about air flow.
Same diameter pipe all the way through and soft bends as much as possible to prevent turbulence and bad airflow.

If i had bad airflow i would expect problems much as you have. Loss of power up high.
There is nothing impeding the flow?

I notice in one of your pics where the snorkel goes through the guard into the engine bay how that did not line up.
Was that fixed and is there something in there directing the flow? Sorry to ask but i cant see from the pics. I assume there is or it would not be a sealed unit.

Hopefully its just something small like a miss aligned part or something.

Philip A, when you removed the “twirler”, was it pretty straight forward (just dremel it off? ). Do I need to alter anything on the outside of the air box

I removed the snorkel today and checked it out with the supplier. We test fitted another snorkel and everything looked the same. From those that have commented, the misalignment isn’t uncommon. They weren’t sure why I had restricted performance so went to see a chap who installs/manufactures snorkels and other 4x4 equipment. His best bet was that the misalignment was so minimal it wouldn’t make much difference and that the snorkel itself is the restricting factor. I would have to agree. He also swears that the shape/thickness etc is practically identical to the more expensive models and that I would have the same result with most suppliers. So perhaps I’m just overly picky! As mentioned before, the car drives perfectly fine, but there is a slight drop off of high end torque on the freeway @100km+. But it’s definitely something I could live with. A slight adjustment in driving style is all that is needed. Also keep in mind I have a bullbar, winch and roof rack with no other performance mods.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:
For the money spent, I think both the snorkel and the follow up service has been good. If someone is on a budget I would say this snorkel is a good option. Yes there were some parts that weren’t perfect, but definitely not a deal breaker.

    Further to the installers comments;
His recommendation was to cut the part that goes through the guard and fit a flexible 75mm (ID) intake pipe through the guard and to the air box. Gave me the pipe which was kind -it’s from a disco 3.
I like to tinker on the car so I may do the mod-again, will try to post some pictures for those interested.

Thanks for the comments and feedback everyone. Sorry it’s been so long!
    Josh.

Yep i agree with him. Seems likely to be where the limitation is.
Hopefully when you get some spare time and do that it will fix the throttling issue.

No I just dremelled the top out of the twirler and didn't touch the bottom much as I didn't want to break through the wall.
I agree that the small flat pipe could be an obstruction but if you measure it, the area is about the same as the snorkel.

Just a quick question regarding the snorkel head.

Is it a 3 inch or 3.5 inch?

The reason I ask is because I need to purchase a new snorkel head but I'm not home till the end of the week to measure it.

    Thank you very much!

The best thing about having a snorkel now is the aircleaner stays clean now! I was amazed how much crap it picked up before fitting the snorkel.
