    Rubbery Vibration at 100 Kph

Car has always had a bit of a vibration on the open road. Now has 310,000 km on it.

Put on a rear diff guard with the diff weight but the guard cracked. I got the guard welded and removed the rear diff weight and all was well.

Years later I got the transfer case overhauled & an ashcroft ATB fitted at the same time.

Now it has a rubbery feeling vibration at 100 kph. Have had shop check their work. I fitted the new HD hardy Spicer front drive shaft - no change.

Greasing the rear shaft seemed to reduce vibration for a little while.

Fitted a new OEM hardy spicer rear drive shaft and car is noticeably smoother at lower speed but now vibrates at 110 kph.

Was wondering if diff weight or trailing arm bush related?????

    Anyone fixed this vibration...

Removed new front driveshaft and locked centre diff. No vibrations up to high speed now. Ashcroft centre diff does feel notchy?

Sounds like the front shaft has a balance problem,,,
Does raise a question,, how do you balance a double cardin?

not sure about the new ashcroft centre diff feeling notchy?
    as you engage and disengage?

Front drive shaft was swapped with a new one so probably not that. Centre ATB might be resisting the difference between front and rear shaft speeds??

I forgot to mention the vibration/shuddering disappeared for a while after 50+ KM of dirt with the centre dif unlocked.

Having the CDL locked on the D1 and driving on anything but soft stuff can destroy the transfer very quickly i believe.
Is this the same with the D2?

not if 1 of the prop shafts are removed, same with D1.

the ashcrofts centre atb diff will feel notchy when turning 1 output when the other is held because rather than differential action , you now have the gears starting to bite. Check the backlash in your front diff and that it feels smooth when turning. If good , try another prop shaft.

*As others have suggested, something is a miss with the front shaft.
*Yes the atb or a good centre diff will feel notchy.
    *If possible try another shaft?
*Was it brand new or a rebuild?

Original front drive shaft that vibrated was standard overhauled & balanced by Hardy Spicer.
Replacement front drive shaft is brand new heavy duty Hardy Spicer unit that vibrated just like the factory freshened one.
Don't see how a third front drive shaft will make a difference..

Vibrations seemed better after a work out for the ATB on dirt road???

Are you aware of the transfer case output bearing condition? what about the condition of the front differential pinion bearing? these may setup a vibration if worn.

No likely not, but I've not yet seen any "rebuilt" front shafts that last the distance.

*Then again as others have suggested, its either a flogged pinion bearing/ something in the front diff or the bearing on the transfer case.
*Keep in mind there will be some vertical play in the transfer case bearing as its a "ball" type bearing and not a tapered seat style.
*And normally flogged bearings on either end will generally be accompanied by a oil leak.
    Regards
    Daz
