Weird air conditioner problem - Fan ONLY works when set to 'Max'.

    Hi All

I have an odd problem with the air con in my 2003 (2004MY) Disco TD5.
Everything looks to be working fine (no codes on the self test) except the fan, which only works when set to 'Max'... so I basically have the option of full ON or (effectively) OFF.
As you can imagine, living in Queensland and coming into summer this could be a bit of an issue.
Unfortunately I don't know the history as I have only recently acquired the vehicle (last Saturday) and it came to me with the problem.

I have done a bit of searching both here and on Google but have not been able to find anyone with the same problem (however this could just be a problem with my search criteria).

I am fairly mechanically able but have no experience with AC systems and as the fan does run when set to 'Max' my guess would be that the problem is with the AC's brain rather than mechanical (I am very open to being corrected on this).

Does anyone have any idea if this is fixable or am I looking at an expensive parts replacement (and if so does anyone have an idea of just how large a mortgage I will need for it)?

    Cheers
    Damon

The fan runs a resistor block to achieve lower speeds . It will be in the heater box flow path of return air (to keep the resistor cool as they do get hot ).not exactly sure where to look on your bus .remove glove box and lower trim panels and good luck.

Ahh, that sounds like a much easier fix than I was worried about, thank you so much.

Hi, being a facelift with aircon it doesnt have a resistor pack(that's only for the non aircon modells) it has a power transistor and you can replace only that on the unit, originally it's Toshiba 2SK2313 but you can use any interchange mosfet transistor you find or if you dont feel handy enough for that the unit's part number is JGN100011, google that out, see images and you'll recognise it on the heater matrix when you see it, that aluminium part you see is the transistor's cooler, it's not so expensive in the UK and cheaper than the non facelift version which has a bigger transistor(JGN100010), the unit is connected to C0858(attached)

Thank you so much Sierrafery, I have the Haynes manual but the pictures in that are not too clear . I will be looking to order the part this week.
    Cheers

With a little thinky time and some skill...

you can ditch the fan resistor and replace it with a 12V10A PWM unit.

    no more resistor issues.

As i said those with aircon dont work with a resistor pack like those with only heater but with a power transistor controlled by an ECU
