All seems to be pretty sweet. One other thing I did which may have made a difference is running water through the rad with a hose pipe. I wonder if it could have been one big air lock? Dunno, any way, all good.

the thermostat location causes air locks imo unless you are able to fill the coolant in from the top hose or have a pipe you screw into the top hose and a funnel that goes into the expansion tank and seals so you can have both open at the same time while getting the engine to temp (which is hard as diesels dont make temp with out load) to get the full system flowing to get rid of any air.
