    Tuning with a Plug n Play POWERBOX CS2 TD5

    Tuning with a Plug n Play POWERBOX CS2 TD5

I just want to share my own experience with a powerbox from eBay. There is no way I have a connection with this shop, just telling you my own personal ideas.

Short story. My 2001 TD5 Auto with 129k kms came to me in stock like new condition and everything was clean and clear, plus a big bonus of very funny poor performance and flat spot in 2200 – 2500 range.

All of the issues were sorted out by cleaning MAP (no difference) sensor, and replacing a cheap MAF sensor got off eBay for only $39 bucks (supposed to be used for BMW but also said to be used for a Landrover Disco 2). The car came back to normal performance (I thought so).

Then same time doing EGR deleted + fitted CS2 PowerBox which bought off eBay from Poland.

Following instruction inside the CS2 package, I ran the tests in about 150kms with a kind of on/off experience. At first, the car responded quite different and better. However, after I tried to “tune” another 6 turns to see how different it could be, turned out nothing different. Even though I felt the car just responded like it was without fitting the CS2 box. (Currently, at this time of writing this thread, I think the better response was happening with the EGR deleted rather than the new CS2 PowerBox). I did not think that was right.

Next 2 days I gave it another few 6 turns, did not feel the difference too. Tried another few 6 turns until it reached the maximum 24 turns (well, the company said 25 turns would be maximum), still felt nothing changed. I thought it was not right, absolutely.

Logical thinking a bit, I remember that the manual book indicated the TD5 ECU would need about 150kms – 300kms to learn new powerbox. So that may get a benefit by temporarily resetting the car to clear the tempt memory, doesn’t it?

Checking all possible ideas, I decided to unplug the battery (negative cable only) and leave it for about 20 minutes. Return the powerbox back to its own standard setting (back 24 turns), then leave the car for next day drive.

The next day drive started with not much difference. However, I really could FEEL the car changed the performance under my foot within first 30-50kms. I absolutely felt the car was learning the new powerbox and responded very well behavior to the new power tune. After 50kms, the car definitely turned out the new high performance I would love to see. This good response actually happened while I was driving and it made me felt so excited (men, it was like you rock the woman to the peak. LOL).

To sum up, my car now is really getting A LOT (I really mean A LOT) more power/torque at low rev in the range 1000 – 2000. Also, there are a lot more power in the range 2500 – 3000 while it significantly reduces all the poor performance in the range 2000 – 2500 (I really can’t recall the poor performance in this range any longer but it was really poor). All the gears change smooth. I can drive the car as fast as all other cars on the road, and take off from the red light is a great pleasure now. The first day when I bought the car I could not believe the car could tow anything but its own body due to weak performance and very sluggish, now I strongly believe that 3T or even 3.5T would be the right figure of towing rate for this “old lady”.

    Conclusions:
    - No tuning diagram / chart but surely the feeling tells the performance. It would believe the claim of 25% more torque and power from CS2 Box.
    - In term of fuel consumption, I still keep measuring but an early indication is that the fuel consumption is LESS than it was before.
    - So one crucial point with this CS2 powerbox: resetting the car would make a huge difference for my car.

Time will tell but I am more than happy to think of using the Disco for years (God knew that I thought of selling her off quickly after a few days of very poor performance after the purchase, but I always told myself she is very young and just a bit more care may bring her back to her own glory. Glad I am a patient man ).

    Awesome to hear Maxperformance!

I've been following your posts and was a little skeptical of a plug in box. Good to hear you're getting it's worth.

Yeah mate, it is definitely worth every single cent until now (for me). About ~300kms after the CS2 box integrated into the car properly and still enjoy every single torque she creates. Turning at corners and take off from red light are very enjoyable now while I know the fuel consumption will not be more but LESS.

If I were you , I would be fitting an EGT gauge ASAP particularly if you plan to tow..

Seeing you have not altered the wastegate settings at 15PSI max , you could be running temps over 700C quite often, which will quickly kill the engine.

    Thanks Philip,
EGT monitor and some other monitor gauges will be the next job. Currently only use for family driving around town in Sydney. The tempt gauge stays at the same middle position all times (similar as when I bought the car before anything changed) and nothing leaks. The wastegate was adjusted a little at the time of fitting the EGR and CS2 (no boost gauge fitted).

Why get the tuning box over an remap? Is it only the price or something else?

Yeah, I'd be getting an EGT gauge and boost gauge fitted.
    Something you'd expect to see:

Drive vehicle with the add on box either connected, or not and check boost and EGT for a specific hill climb.
The either connect or disconnect the add on box(depending on what you did on the first test drive) and test again on the same road or hill climb.

What you'd expect to see is, for the same amount of boost, if you feel that you have more power from the addon box, then by common reasoning, you'd also have higher EGTs.
If EGT's are the same for the same amount of boost pressure, then it could be a placebo effect.

    Otherwise get it dynoed!
    Arthur.

    Good question.

Mainly it is about the experience, not money relationship.

And I found out that with a kind of 25% more power, 25% more torque, plus LESS fuel consumption (factory claim but I confirmed the feel of performance was right on spot) right out of a 5 minutes Plug n Play box like this is worth to say that I had very good experience on this box, and happy to tell my own story.

Ok thanks for that, just my experience as

I installed an NNN ecu into an pre update d2 TD5 and the remap is some much better than stock, fuel is down and I can drag race people onto the freeway, no more lag and better throttle response, plus have the ability to change on the fly my .tunes and parameters from Td5inside.

Would be interested to see what difference an box vs an remap on an dyno would be

On freeway or at red light on flat road, I am sure there is no feeling of TD5, it is just like driving a normal good performance car. Except when going start from the bottom of the hill that is where we feel it is a real TD5. Never mind though

I think remap is a more genuine option and I would think of doing this later too while thinking of using the box in its own way.
