    Mystery clunking from SLS compressor box

    Noticed tonight that the boss's D2 has a random clunking sound dining from the SLS compressor box while parked and locked. It's had the airbags replaced with coils by the PO and I noticed the compressor relay removed.

    Any idea what might be causing the clunking?

    If the relay has been removed then it probably isn't the compressor that is "clunking"

    Not sure, but pretty good chance it's just had the springs fitted and relay pulled.

    Do they need to be disabled with Nanocom or is it a fuse/relay job?

    G'day G,

    Just trying to think back to my old one, I think it might just be a fuse pull. I'm pretty sure the SLS had it's own fuse.

    Now I just looked at the workshop manual and maybe not. You might have to jump under the car and pull the plug.

    The clicking is the revenge of the D2 which was humiliated with coils instead of that brilliant SLS

    The best is to set the suspension type in the SLABS ECU to coils otherwise beside the clicking there is a parasitic battery drain too but if a tester is not available as first move all the connectors in the compressor housing must be unplugged cos the solenoids are still getting commands hence the clicking, there is no dedicated fuse or relay for that cos the solenoids are directly managed by the ECU.

    I've really got to agree with serraferry WHY the hell would you want to get rid of SLS! It is much better than coils. When I had my D2 I had to replace the air springs, but that was my fault. You just can't put 1.2tonne of pavers in the back and think they will last. Although it was about a year after that the air springs started to play up. But then at (I think back then) new air springs were $380 for the pair. But never had a problem with them. Never had to touch the compressor.

    I just can't understand why anyone want's to go to coils from air springs. Really the system is not that complex and not that much can go wrong.

    When I got my 95 Range Rover Classic someone replaced the air bags with coils. Makes no sense to me. The ride was hideous. The air suspension IS reliable. It cost me lest than a grand to fit 4 new air springs, rebuild the valve block and put a new seal in the compressor.

    Please if you have a air suspended Land Rover keep it on air!

    Hooked up the Nanocom last night and set it to coils (was still set to air).
    Was getting late so didn't wait around to see if the clunking had gone, but hopefully all good now.

    Ah well - looks like the clunking is still there as I heard it a number of times tonight.
    I'll have to pull the compressor cover off and track it down.

    But did you disable the SLS in SALBS too not just in instrument pack and made sure that the setting was saved? there are cases when even though you select the options the "write settings" command to be inefective if you dont let nanocom hooked ay least 15 seconds after the setting was made.... technically there's no reason to have any inputs from SLABS ECU toward the valves or compressor with a coil setting
