Upgrade TD5 Torque Converter with V8 TC and Ashcrofts custom flex plate

    Hi All,
Been a long time since posted but still into TD5 Disco's after all these years.

I'm finally ready to try an upgraded TC in my TD5 D2a. Got a 03 D2a TC donor & I saw before Xmas that Ashcroft now sells a custom flex plate that enables the 4 bolt hole TC to be bolted up to the TD5 flywheel. I cannot find it on their website now but they advised they should be back in stock the end of this month so will probably be relisted then. It can be seen on their TD5 heavy duty TC page.

Seems like a reasonable option rather than modifying the V8 TC. The TC bolts are somewhat more difficult to access

Has anyone tried this option as I'd be interested in feedback.

    Thanks.

Yuck. I've got one of their older setups where the V8 torque converter has been modified to fit to the Td5 setup. Can't say I'm a fan of the level of modification required for this new setup:

The stock TD5 converter has 3 bolts, the new one has 4, the 4 bolts sit in a different place and its a little harder to axcess the new bolts. We can supply a couple of parts to assist you, see related parts below and you will also need a ratchet spanner to fit the 4 converter bolts but to hold the bolts in place and create friction for the ratchet to click you will need to drill a hole in the bellhousing and use some long nose pliers to hold the bolt in place whilst you tighten it with the spanner through the normal lower axcess hole. Click here to see a template so you know where to drill the hole.

Why’s that? The website makes it sound like the best thing since sliced bread.

Because on mine, which is their old style, they modified the torque converter, so when I received it it was a straight bolt in fitment. On their new style, you've got to drill holes in your bell housing, get special spanners, etc. Sure, there's an advantage that you can get any V8 torque converter locally, but seems a bit extreme and effort...

But I think you may have misinterpreted my above comment and assumed I was talking about the result and drivability performance of the product - I wasn't, I'm commenting on the fitment of.

I've also got the older setup mentioned with the modified TC. But to answer your question it is nothing short of amazing, assuming you have a tune to overcome the extra drag on the engine at take off from slow speeds or stopped.

Thanks for your reply. I was more interested in feedback about the installation. I see it that the benefit of the new kit is I can use a local TC. The downside is any future mechanical work that involves the TC is a little messy & of course the issue of the mods to the bell housing. The kit was about 160 pounds and shipping may not be too bad either so the price is right.

So potentially a very affordable option that should provide the same performance.

TD5Inside emailed me the other week to let me know my remap is ready.....but email communications is very slow with Jose so I am not sure when I will actually get it. Hopefully soon.

I am about to order an Ashcroft tranny and this new TC setup. I currently run the old Ashcroft TC. Dead set best mod you can make next to an TD5 inside tune.

My pump has died in the Disco without any metal in the tranny pan so I am expecting the TC to be fin but will get it opened and cleaned up. that way.
    I’ll pm you #wechosethegoodlife

Without actually knowing it, he's been having issues with his e-mails for the past four months or so. His firewall or virus scanner or whatever has been flagging outgoing e-mails with attachments, so a lot of tunes that he thought he had delivered have not been. I believe this is resolved now, or he is at least aware of it and using other methods for delivery - I received mine today.
