Low range auto manual mode torque converter lockup... but in REVERSE?

I finished a heap of maintenance on the D2 last week and took it for a spin around the property, I think I may have finally solved my lag on take off (I came to the conclusion that exhaust or inlet manifold was leaking or both, but with no tell tales to speak of), but that isn't what I was posting about.

I have a track I've been meaning to find the balls to open up to provide a second route down into our valley, and on test runs I'll often go and just take a run at the hill to about half way up where it gets a bit.... commitful. I will then do a failed hill climb routine and give it a few shots to try and bed in at least the lower part.

I reckon I might not have actually taken the D2 there before, I've had the D1 V8 and the holden/isuzu ute manual up there and the failed climb process is all as expected, yes, in the V8 it's definitely a bit uncomfortable..

I expected the D2 to be awesome, 1st gear locked descents (I don't tend to use HDC) are brilliant, as good as a manual, but the reverse one was pants soiling, I didn't have the balls to let it go for too long and see if it engaged, but I ended up using brakes and was really starting to think about at least neutral.

I know it was common but not good practice to use 1st on the D1 autos for failed hill climb, and I did that by accident on my D2 V8 a long time ago, anyone have any idea if D2 will lock up in reverse at all? I should check the manual, but I suspect it won't lock up for at least a bit of distance, which makes it no use I guess.

I prefer not to use HDC as well but find that the “driving thru the brakes” technique works just as well when reversing as it does when in forward motionLow range auto manual mode torque converter lockup... but in REVERSE?

I found the user manual and had a read. It does cover failed hill climb and does suggest reverse gear and HDC engaged. I think I might give it a go with HDC next time I head down there and see how it feels. I tend to think HDC is a bit fast for my preference usually though.

Might sound a bit counterintuitive but a quick stab of the loud pedal usually gets it working a bit quicker

Me too, it's another reason why I "drive" through the brakes because as the driver i like to be in control rather than leave it to a computer.....

Ooooo! that'd be a real test of faith - descending in reverse having delegated all responsibility to the the BCU !!

..... the sphincter muscle would get a real work out too
