I'm not sure if the slave was removed, master was though. Slave is cheap enough to replace anyway so will do that and know I have a fresh one.
Is there anything I should be weary of when changing? I've read some posts about some sort of clip that is near impossible to get back on

When the original mechanic had the master cylinder out, he has replaced it incorrectly, so that the push rod is not acting as it should. You are not getting full travel, (the clutch pedal is 150mm lower than the brake) and therefore the clutch mechanism is not dis-engaging fully. I would have a trained mechanic look at fixing that. Someone on the forums may know more about that procedure if you want to try it yourself.
