    Scuttle Panel Plenum Grille JAK000010PMA

    Hi all
The scuttle panel below my windscreen is cracked right in the middle over the air intake which means water gets in and I end up with wet carpet on the passenger side. There are also other cracks on the panel and it feels crumbly so fixing it with silicone will probably not be an option.
Currently tossing up between genuine and aftermarket part. Is there much difference between the two in terms of quality? Which one is better? Would appreciate some guidance and advice on where best to get one. Cheers.

    Candeniz,

I recently replaced my scuttle panel/plenum as mine was more skiaflex than actually panel.

I bought a new old stock fibreglass one from a bloke a while back. Everything fitted perfectly and it looks good.

I wouldn't bother with a genuine plastic one because I'm sure I would be replacing it again soon thanks to the sun.

I believe a certain internet auction site has a seller who has fibreglass ones for sale from Indonesia. Someone else might know more but that's all I know about him.

    My $0.02

I pulled mine out(not so easy), as it had a similar sounding split.
Epoxied it down the split, and set it up to cure in the correct shape.

Then on the back side of it(hidden side) I epoxied two long metal pieces(they come in radio kits, or central locking kits) about 150mm long, with their holed sections helping to get the epoxy to set across more surface area.
Worked a treat. Should have sanded and painted it first, but I wanted to be sure it didn't break on trying to re-install it first.

I didn't have any fibreglass to try that, and also I had lots of those metal pieces form the various rubbish I tend to hoard anyhow .. and metal is strong!

BUT! .. I wouldn't have thought that water gets into the cabin based only on that scuttle panel. It's not a water tight seal, and it should have vented section to allow air through to the ventilation anyhow!
So I reckon you probably have another issue allowing water in.
    Arthur.

The water comes in through the air conditioning intake under the plenum and then travels through the unit and out onto the passenger footwell carpet.

Ask me how I know that.....

The Plennium on my D2a was absolutely shot as were the side trims on the windscreen and I had these replaced with brand new genuine ones when I last had my windscreen replaced free of cost
Next time you get a windscreen replacement (these are usually Free with most insurance claims) ask your local Indi IF they can do the job and replace the plennium and trims at the same time,
I also got a Genuine Landrover windscreen fitted as well instead of the usual crappy third party ones that tend to leak

I backed into a power pole at King Ash Bay in the Gulf and had the damage fixed at Whyatts when I got back home and I asked IF they could also replace the windscreen which was a different claim (No Excess) and do the plennium and trims at the same time, Shane said that this was possible and after a couple of days of both myself And Shane being buggered around by the insurance company we got the OK to get the job done.
Thanks to Shanes patience and commitment to customer service I would Never have known it was possible to have these extras added to a windscreen replacement job, Just another reason why I only let Whyatts in Geraldton touch my D2a

Get a fiberglass replacement from Malaysia. Fits like a glove and looks a lot better than the plastic original with no caps for the left hand drive wiper holes. Just tell them its for a right hand drive so holes are there for the wipers. And it shouldn't fall apart like plastic does in the sun.
Note that they quote in USD, so the price will be the part, freight and GST all in USD and then exchange rate to AUD.

    Correct.

I made a shroud from lead flashing to house the air intake from rain.

It was a while ago but I think it's about 50mm wide, around the sides and top of the intake.

You could use any old thin sheet metal and fold/cut/rivet/weld to suit.

Will solve your water ingress problem.

And don't worry that the fiberglass one does not have the holes in front and the foam filter.

THE AIR DOES NOT COME IN THERE ANYWAY! I have no idea why LR put the foam there. They must have had a different design for air intake in mind then changed their mind.

After having a look at a Malay fiberglass One I was very impressed and will go that way if the second hand good one I bought dies.
And yes you have to be careful to not lift the bonnet too high as it does crack the plenum cover. The most important thing is to tell windscreen repairers that they have to remove the bonnet before trying to remove the plenum cover.

Looking at the holes I can only surmise that they are placed to let hot air out of the engine bay. But if that was the case why put foam there?

For the record I fitted a genuine one a couple of years ago and didn’t need to remove the bonnet to fit it.

    cheers

    Steve
