    Solar Controller Location

Can anyone see a reason why I can’t mount my controller here? 2000 D2 TD5. It’d be tek screwed to the metal under the cabling that’s in the pic

    A) I thought that it’d b ok there as I’m pretty sure that it’s resin coated over the electronics.
I’m starting to run out of room under the steering column!
    C) I thought they had to be as close as possible to the battery for optimal use

    D) there’s an air compressor under the drivers seat
    E) has thought of over here, but thought the turbo would make it too hot

all of your points are correct but in very short order exposure to moisture will cause
    1. copper corrosion on the exposed ends of your wire in the terminal blocks
    2. galvanic corrosion of the terminals to the copper
    3. rust to form on the now oxidised terminals
    4. the plating will lift and the solder for the terminals will fail.

the best place for them electrically is as close to the battery as practicable
the best place for them mechanically is somewhere cool and dry.

I put mine in the roof and ran the cabling in the side clips for the roof harness behind the lining and down the A pillar.

Get a tupperware container for sandwiches
Drill some holes to suit your cables
Mount tupperware container to the body
Mount controller inside the container and silicone around the cables

Right. So in short, if I can’t find a weather proof enclosure that will magically fit both the controller and that location, find a location inside the cab.

The solar controller you have is an IP47 unit which is a fairly low weatherproofing rating, You can always mount it under the dash on the passenger side as you have used the room under the steering wheel and you will still be close to the battery

How far is ‘too far from the battery’? I’m happy to use 8b&s wire from controller to battery to minimise voltage drop. My 2nd battery is mounted next to the starting battery & I don’t use the old battery mount.

    The phot says IP43.
3 is the water/fluid exposure and that is not very high.
3 says safe from splashes of water.
have a look at the IP ratings by a 1second Google.
