.BMW has a lot to be sorry for :-)
    A 4.6 is just a development of the 3.5.
The process is the same but the Thor manifold is a bit more fiddly to remove.
To look at the cam in both, you have to remove the inlet manifold and valley gasket and I guess the rocker covers.
I fitted a Thor manifold to a 3.9 so been there done that.

Yeah hard to tell. Could be headers, liner, or something else. Dunno. But it lets you know it's cooling down and has done for the 100,000 kms I've put on it. She's on borrowed time.

Thks gary yes not like though the rocker covers just there I have had a RRC, and a Disco 1 with the 3.5 and it was certainly easier to remove to remove the rocker covers. If I was in better health and if I hadnt had them off by myself and an extreemely trusted mecahic and inspected when the noise started some 2 years ago I would do it again, but given it seems like the same noise just worse I dont know I would see anything. Still if I was in better health I would agree until you look you dont know. the other thing is with the car on the hoist and up to temp you would swear its a sound comming thru the block you can almost feel it in the sump :-(.... If I hadnt spent days working on this car and lots of dollars I would pull then heads etc and have a look but I just aint up to it anymore.
I appreciate all your thought comments and help. I am not sure how to get the LR bood out of the system if I go elsewhere 2 Discoverys 1, and 2 Discoverys 2, 2 Defenders, 1 RRC and one P38a and even a S3 2.6 kinda means you have had a certain brand committment although the vehciles produced after these these i.e since BMw an ford has kinda lost me oh well.

So does it make the noise when the engine is cold? If yes then likely a tappet, but if only when hot most likely a slipped liner but also could just be a tappet.
When it started I was sure it was a bad tappet hence swapped them all out, but didnt make a bit of difference so I was either very unlucky or it wasnt a tappet the noise has now changed is less consistent i.e not so tap tap repeatedly. The noise has got worse and has always been there hot or cold but worse when its hot. Thks unless I pull this again I will definitely never know but I think thats where I will leave it and pass it on for whats it worth as is. Waste of a lot of parts energy and $$ but thats what happens sometimes I guess.

Dont beat yourself up too badly,, I went with a very well known sunshine coast LR business to build my 4.6 MkI,, lasted less than 30K and 8 months. 10K flushed.

Yeah s.@#! Happens. We put many $ks into a Patrol zd30 plus many hours of my labour and it lasted 3 months. Now it spews a litre of oil out of the rocker cover each day 😐

Don't mention my supercharged D1 V8....OMG. I.could have started my own repair shop on the cash put into that pos....but it was fun in cathartic way!

    Just move on...that's my motto☺

One problem that the 3.5 on have always had is that sometimes the camshaft moves backwards and forwards and makes a noise.
It is only positioned by the timing chain and the ramps on the lobes, and I think that the problem still existed with the later motors.

On the earlier motors the fix was a Teflon/plastic button on a bolt on the front of the cam so that it could not move and AFAIR it was even a Land Rover part at one stage.
    Could be that.

I have spent money making sure its not tappet or bearing noise which cost a heap more. So rather than putting more $$ into it am going to get rid of it.

However, I am wondering how long can I keep driving it with the slipping liner note these are turner engineering top hat liners, I have not had any coolant issues. There is nothing in the LR lineup currently that I am interested in unfortunately I hate the body off requirements and complexity that they have gone to maybe the Defender replacement will be different so as the D2 is worthless with the slipped liner I figure I at least might as well drive it for as long as possible. Any guidance on how long this might be is appreciated.
If the truck isn't overheating and performing as usual just keep driving it until it dies if you don't want to spend any more quids on it
If the tapping noise annoys you just turn the stereo up a bit so you cant hear it

I spent much time and effort chasing what seemed to be lifter noise in my 4.6 top hat liner v8. To make a long story short, it turned out to non-genuine rocker arms. 2 of them had cracks in the steel insert that meets the push rod.

I too spent a while today around and under the engine with a screwdriver stethoscope. Estimated the tick to be about 5 per second, or 300 per minute... so cam shaft speed.

Can't really be heard above the heads. Equal volume from both wheel arches. From underneath it's louder from the rear of the engine. Bellhousing seems to amplify it.

Gotta be a shot lifter or lobe.

No noise when cold, and when warm it eases with revs (better oil pressure?)

Can't grasp why it's quiet when cold.
