D2 4.0 How long can I continue with slipped Top Hat liner

In have a 2004 D2 4.0 which I have spent bucket loads ( over 20K on an initial partial rebiuld then a second full rebiuld with new top hat liners etc) I wont mention the firm in North West melb that did the work who claimed extensive LR engine rebuild history needless to say I cant on my experience recommend using any engine rebiulders in that neighbourhood) but 2 x last time I had Turner Eng's top hat liners install but it seem they stuffed up installing the liners and one of them has been tapping.

I have spent money making sure its not tappet or bearing noise which cost a heap more. So rather than putting more $$ into it am going to get rid of it.

However, I am wondering how long can I keep driving it with the slipping liner note these are turner engineering top hat liners, I have not had any coolant issues. There is nothing in the LR lineup currently that I am interested in unfortunately I hate the body off requirements and complexity that they have gone to maybe the Defender replacement will be different so as the D2 is worthless with the slipped liner I figure I at least might as well drive it for as long as possible. Any guidance on how long this might be is appreciated.

Sorry but how does a Top Hat liner slip - the only way that I can think of is the grove in the block has been cut deeper than the top hat so when the liner is installed there is room for it to move or the liner was not rammed fully home when the top of the block was skimmed.

But if installed correctly it basically cannot move.

    As Garry says,, cant move.

Does it run ok otherwise? not missing or using coolant?

A friend of mine recently had a 4.6 top hatted but when the engine was installed it started over heating and loosing coolant.

The engine was pulled removed and pulled down and it was found some of the top hats had moved. When the engine was built, the groove was cut correctly into the block but for some reason the liners were no pushed all the way down leaving a bit of space under the top hat. The block was then skimmed to remove any excess top hat but with the space under the hats the liners moved.

The engine builder is fixing the issue by installing new liners and making sure they are pushed home.

So really the only way the liners can move is by poor installation.

If the problem as has been suggested is faulty workmanships then you have a case through cat or fair trade to have the problem fixed.

Without pulling the engine down difficult to prove it was also three years ago now , and they machined the block and installed the liners only.

@garycol, yes I believe a similar thing has happened to this 4.0, my issue is I would need to pull the engine again identify thats the issue and get the engine machinist agreement to fix it. I have taken the car to them an they will look at it but unless I pull the engine and its definitely there fault and they are persuaded its not overheated they will do something with some $$ from me. I am hard pressed to throw more money into it.

Yes runs ok just a bit of noise so am not willing to take it more than 100kms to risk a long tow home. removing the BMW TSTAT and replacing with inline TSTAT bleed valve has ensured it almost nevr goes above 85 degrees and fuel economy hasnt budged.
