    auto gear box

1/ Has anyone imported a rebuilt auto gearbox foe a TD5 from Ashcroft?
2/ Is it cheaper than the $5000.00 I am being quoted for a rebuild here in Geelong?
3/ what was the freight cost?
    Regards, Nick.

It'll be a minimum of about $300, I'd say closet to $500, going by the $200ish charge just for two ATB centres!(~ 15-20kgs).
It'll have to be crated, etc.

Add GST .. just the non return deposit is 500 GBP .. about AUD900-950!!
So it could pay to search the likes of UK ebay or gumtree for a cheap auto over there and get it delivered to Ashcrofts as your core deposit if you do go down that path.

Their current pricing is in the 750GBP region, so close to AU1400.

So add 1400+500(shipping)+any extras you may want(HD torque converter and flex plate??)+ GST on all that.

If you do the S/H purchase in the UK to send as the exchange .. you should come out of it ahead .. except that you also need to get someone to install it here. (depending on who you know, maybe $500)

Assumption is that the Geelong $5K quote included all work involved too.

Then there's the issue of installer/rebuilder accusations if something goes wrong .... eg. installer doesn't install correctly and trans pump isn't properly engaged and trans dumps it's guts in a few hundred klms!

I did less than 2 years ago but would never do it again as warranty is a dead loss. Also beware of unexpected freight/handling and tax issues that can arise eg transfer fee from international to domestic that they don't tell you about and customs import duties that can spiral if they decide they want to take a closer look at it.

Mine crapped the torque converter mounting point in less that 15000 ks and Ashcroft were not interested in helping in Ny way saying it is a weak point known to them..but not said to me.

True locals cost heaps more eg I was quoted 5500 and had to drop it off to them on the mainland ..but at least there's a chance they will stand by the rebuild. Mine cost about 3500 to buy and import plus another 1300 to get it installed. It took ages to get it thru custom/border farce as they were concerned about oil..dirt..and other more nefarious issues😎

My advice...go local....look to get a rebuilt and strengthened torque converter and hd flex plate too.

Try getting hold of the pyes, theyve got a couple of D2s with working autos that might get you out of trouble for less.

I know a guy who knows them well enough to change out the bearings and clutchpacks as well as swapping out the Flex plate as part of the install if you're interested.

Not the same I know, but the auto in our D1 cost about $4000 to rebuild from memory.

My d2 auto cost about 4k last year, complete rebuild at 400,000km and that was drive in drive out by a transmission specialist who does a lot of the work for Land Rover specialist mechanic. That was in Sydney

Looks like the price may have come down as i could not find anyone under 5k in Aus..hence going to the UK..back then. Many i called simply said we don't touch them..including ZF themselves. Wonder what has changed?

.def get someone to beef up the torque converter mounts as they are rubbish.

It is harder to get parts for these transmissions and ZF have stopped making some of the parts, Did mine for under a thousand but did a lot of research before starting and parts from the USA, they are a tricky thing to do hence the cost.
