    99 td5 ecu

I am looking at a 99 td5 that has 270k on the clock and is in very good condition except for the ECU which I am told is fried . The price is very reasonable and an ECU does not seem to be very expensive ,I have a couple of landrovers ,swb .lwb series 2a and a 09 freelander 2 and other S2As in the past so I understand the beast but know little about the discovery . I would appreciate comments and advice from those that know .

Might be a good time to put in a remapped ecu

I would not go down the ECU route till you get someone to throw a NANOCOM or other reader on it. It could be something like immobiliser et. Find out its symptoms and put it in post. For example does it crank and not fire? Can you hear the fuel pump prime, have they checked all the fuses. We also need to know is it auto or manual. Baz

I is definitely the ecu I went and inspected the vehicle this morning and it is is in excellent condition ,no sign of heavy off road use or abuse with the interior also in excellent condition 4 good tyres with 2 good spares so I have purchased the vehicle as the price was way below red books low price .The ecu is fried ,I have it here and there is a big black scorch mark inside it .

You should know that the ECU will not start the engine unless it's programmed to learn the security code then for the engine to run well you have to save the injector codes in it which means a dedicated tester is complusory

I am not quite sure what you are saying .If I fit an ecu for that engine /transmission it will not run ? What do you mean by a dedicated tester and what will it do

The ECU will not let the engine run unless a nanocom or similar tester with special software for the D2/Td5 is used to program the ECU to the vehicle

In other words, you can’t just take a random ECU and plug it in - it won’t work. You need to plug in the new ecu and get a nanocom to program it to the car
