The sidewall width of the tyre will be wider with the 8" rim and narrower with the 7" rim. The narrow rims pull the sides of hte tyre in.

Well this is embarrassing ..... I didn't realise there was such a thing!
This has made me even more confused than before, firstly after 30 + cars in my life, have never had a car speedo read over, always 3-5 (once 7) under the 100, back in the old days the overhead signs and for the last 10 years or so, gps.
The D2 has 235 70 16 tyres on the 8" rims but checking the speedo coming down the hume yesterday, 4 k's over according to the gps and the other car in convoy - the D1 now reads around that with 235 80 16 on the 7" rim.
Checking with the previous owner, the rims were purchased up round ALbury as a set about 15 years ago, it had steel rims on which one is one the vehicle now, leading me to believe even further the D2 was fully kitted out and returned to standard, this being the case then, the car was doing 85 kph at 2000 revs (gps) is this standard gearing? or do the tyres which are nearly 9" wide rise when on a larger rim!!!! ???
Ballbag noticed it on the D1, 1st low range was fine, 2nd just a bit too long with the 32" tyres, is this the case again with the auto or does it tend to run in auto 1? This being the case as it will be the car driven by the "others' with less experience, would the 245 75 16 be a safer option re retardation down steep slopes
