Cylinder sleeve failure or something else?

5000km since I installed new head gaskets and now this:
Not sure what is going on yet, but the coolant must be coming from somewhere.

Looks like a cracked block behind the sleeve in the filled cylinder to me.
That is the normal failure area with blocks that are a little out of true when cast.

I fear you are right Philip.
I’m still trying to comprehend how a failure behind a sleeve results in coolant in the cylinder. In the sump, I can understand.
Anyhow, the next question is, where to from here? A new block sounds expensive.
I suppose I can take a little consolation that the new head gasket with stretch bolts I recently installed was not the problem.
I can’t see how I’m going to get this thing back on the road unfortunately. I had always intended to keep it indefinitely. SWMBO is not impressed.

Sorry to hear that mate. It's not a common problem but does happen. You could get it TIG welded then machined but a other block would probably be more economical.

I haven’t found the cause yet, so there is still hope that the head is the problem rather than the block. Here’s another view:

I am afraid that I have never seen a V8 head crack in the inlet port. There are no water passages between the head and block other than at both ends.

It's a pity you cleaned the deck without a close look.

The leak is usually under the fire ring from the back of the sleeve ( ie the join between the sleeve and block) into the combustion chamber.

A sleeve that has sunk at all is also a dead giveaway. Can you catch your thumbnail between the sleeve and block deck?
The steamed cleaned piston is also a dead giveaway ( as yours is)

But by all means have the head pressure tested to isolate that as a cause.

Thanks Philip, I accept what you are saying.
Amazing really, one day I have a car in good mechanical condition and the next, it’s worthless.
My question now is, where to from here?
    Any ideas?
A second hand motor is not very appealing as I could end up back at square one.
Turner Engineering’s top-hatted block seems like a good idea, although quite expensive. Has anyone in Australia gone down this road?
The other option is to part it out, but not too keen on that.
For those out there with similar issues, how did you sort it out?
I’m open to all and any ideas, as I honestly have no clue what to do next. Cylinder sleeve failure or something else?

Where are you mate. I got a 4.6 High Comp complete inc accessories for $3k with 25,000 k on it from Hong Kong where they do bugger all ks.

Pedro has done a Turners motor from memory.

Triumph Rover might be the go.
