    Engine Storage.

hi folks. i'm in the process of buying a spare engine " TD5 " for my disco 2. its got approx 110k's on it with docs to prove it. looks like it was removed from car, cleaned, and stored under a table in cnr of a garage with a sheet over it.
my question is to do with corrosion !! after draining the coolant, air has been in the cooling system for years. what are the chances of corrosion in the water pump / oil cooler system ? any thoughts ?? there is no info to suggest it was flushed out before storage. thanks.

    Engine Recommissioning.

hello again. update !! just off the phone from original owner. engine out of a 2000 td5 that rolled over. had 10k's on it. transplanted by "ritters" into a range rover. 100k's later flex plate split. sat in car for at least 6 years in shed. "4bd1" was fitted into car. td5 sold on as spare engine for disco 2 owner. sat in his shed for 5 years approx. then he sold his td5 car.
as near as i can work out , its been sitting for between 12 - 14 years.
obviously i can't just fit it into a car and turn the key. will i have to strip down the bottom end and oil bearing shells etc. ? what about the injectors sitting for so long ?? what about pistons in cylinders ? fill with oil and turn by hand ??
any advice from the mechanically minded members would be helpfull. thanks. pete.

Sorry I can’t help you, I’m just watching this thread with interest as I’ve toyed with the idea of buying a spare TD5 and storing it in the shed also.

I usually block the ports and fill engine with coolant to the top for storage . But with a dry engine you will need to change the water pump at the very least , the oil cooler seals would be OK but its so easy it would be silly not to renew while engine is out .

update :- loaded engine into crate and trailered it home. it spent winter in its box in cnr of my caravan annex.
pulled it out last week. all openings had been covered / taped up. no oil showing on dipstick. BUT engine turns over easily. no coolant in block. outlet in head is super clean. no corrosion at all. looks like new. but i have a problem !!!

calling "td5 gurus ":- looks like a home made cover has been fitted to fuel pressure regulator. it as a barbed hose outlet attached as well.

what's it for ? old school mod ??? is barb a drain or should it be fitted to something ??

any help will be much appreciated. gofer :-)

Probably to direct any leaks from the FPR to a drain hose. Good Idea if a bit amateurish.
Some actual regulators come with a outlet spigot for that purpose.

BUT its only sikaflexed on at the base . IMHO it would **** out fuel under 40PSI.

    its just a drainer.

to sort the cooling system fill it with soluble oil and water leave it sit then drain it

    for the oil..

remove the oil pressure sensor, adapt it to a small facet pump and pump oil in for a minute or 2 then crank the engine over slowly,

put the sensor back in and now turn it on the starter.

30 seconds every month or so and it will be right.
