I'd only use a full syn, and FWIW there's this list of approved oils that ZF publish and all the ones on the TE11b list that applies to the 4HP22E are....

To be on that list it means the oil has to be submitted to ZF, your money paid (not an insubstantial amount) tested and then a license is issued if it passes their wear and performance tests.

And another FWIW, all the oils on the TE11a/b lists meet or exceed the old (as it's superseded) Dexron IIIH spec

The most respected, well regarded oil for these trans is Castrol Transmax Z, a full synthetic fluid (PAO/ester)

I'd do several more oil changes, you've replaced less than half of the old oil, and plenty of us use ATF FS without any problems whatsoever, it's a very good oil IMO.

How clean were you when doing the filter and pan?
The tiniest bit of crap can create problems in the valve body.
There's a reason autos are assembled in a dust free assembly room.
Did you use a solvent to clean the pan? (most leave residue, white spirit is a good one to use as it dries cleanly)

Right, I’ve got some homework to do! I think that the Penrite is unopened, so I might consider getting trans max. I’ll do the oil changes on Friday & c how things go afterwards.

I can’t quite remember, is it about 6lt that this trans will take to fill?

Transmax z is ps & ace compatible? I use the penrite ace stuff

Better not rely on those who sell oils for profit or on ''smart guys'' from various forums... IMO stick to the oil recommended by those who built it and for the D2 ZF4HP22/24 autobobox it must be a version of Dexron III. Period

All the oils mentioned already (both! [emoji23]) are DexIIIH fluids, which doesn't really mean anything anymore as it's a superseded specification, ie. you can't submit a fluid to GM to be tested and licensed, we're relying on the oil blender's integrity that it meets the old spec.

But ZF do release a list of licensed oils, as mentioned above.

then i'm sorry and my apologies... though in my ignorance when ever i google out "dexron 3 transmission oil" i find up to date sites which are selling it now without being obsolete, just one example from many
RAVENOL ATF Dexron III H - Ravenol so as long as Dexron III is still available on the market i'd buy that instead of ''smart'' alternatives as the D2 autobox is still that old one fitted 15-20 years ago which didnt get younger in time nor superseded

No need to be sorry, just pointing out what most people don't realise that the actual specification has been officially superseded by Dexron VI, although I wouldn't use a Dex VI as it's a low viscosity fluid, but it has superior oxidation, wear and clutch lock up characteristics to a DEX III while meeting the frictional requirements for the clutches.

And FWIW I'd much rather use an ATF with a modern add package that meets the frictional requirements of Dex III
Lubricants have come a long way in the last 15 years.
