    Unhappy Need advice on what may have gone so horribly wrong.

    So last Saturday I trotted off to meet some new people and do this little day trip. And all was going well until my D2 TD5 just stopped which you can briefly read about here.

    Everything pointed to a crank angle sensor. So.....

    Went and got the crank angle sensor today and this arvo gave the area of concern a good clean in preparation for the task tomorrow. So while I had the bonnet up I again checked the coolant, all good. And also the oil OMFG!!!!! I checked the oil the day before this trip and was spot on full mark, now half way up the dip stick!!



    Here is a little more detail on what actually transpired on the day. Everything was moving along in a normal fashion, there was no excess temp in the coolant, transmission or EGTs. I have additional guages. We got to the dirt road and I slipped the CDL in and got the cheerful bong, bong, bong and the appropriate light on the dash. Perhaps less than 100m further and no power, engine light on, and other lights in association with engine not running. Rolled to a halt and tried to restart. Nothing, crank but no fire.

    That's when the .... other lights appeared. ACE warning light on, yellow. M & S lights flashing. No engine light. On interrogation with Nanocom found no faults in engine, ACE has fault of "Engine Speed Signal Missing". Transmission (auto) has fault P1843 "Can Timeout Monitoring". Neither will clear.

    This vehicle (second owner 350+k kms) has an extensive service history and I have done oil and filters every 10k kms and between services has used maybe 0.5L or less of oil. Do injector seals just let go and flood the sump? Has the head cracked? There is a load of diesel in the sump!!!!! Yes I did the blot test and yes it smells like diesel, there's probably more diesel than oil!!

    I don't know where to start. Do I bother starting? Is it now a parts bomb?

    the diesel will be most likely be from a failed injector seal, the easy way to check the source is to bridge the fuel pump relay with a switch or wire while you have the rocker cover off.

    the fuel rail pressure dropping to 0 from a crack or a popped injector will account for the sudden complete stop.

    the engine doing an undetectable stop (no other fault codes or computer/ignition related shutdown code) will bring up other weird errors from things that are expecting engine RPM inputs.

    IF youve cracked the head in the right way near a cam journal post it can rip open the fuel gallery in the head, and the easiest way I know to check for it is to dump the oil and with the sump plug out power up the fuel pump.

    as a safety feature if the engine RPM hits 0 for any reason the fuel pump is automatically shut down which is why you didnt pump the whole tank into the engine.

    I had a slightly different issue to start with but ended up with the same problem.

    I dropped it a British Offroad, picked it up a week later, it was a drain on the finances but all good now.

    Ended up with new head and pretty much every thing on the cooling system replaced.

    Thanks Dave, I'm guessing your the Dave I spoke to on Ian's phone on the day. I'll be intouch soon, I have some logistical issues to work on first.

    I'll most likely do it myself but will take some time. I would like to just hand it to someone and get it back all nice and new(ish) but there are very little finances to drain.

    Yes have gleaned lots of very useful information from this place over the time I've been here. Have managed to get the garage cleaned out and the car in there, the bonnet is up so that is a start.

    Well to start with there wasn't as much diesel in the oil as I thought there was, which was quite a relief. Replaced the Crank Angle Sensor, found a leaking Fuel Pressue Regulator which probably killed the CAS, new regulator. While it was in bits and I had the rocker cover off I did the injector seals and a new injector harness. Plus the normal stuff, oil, filters, gaskets were necessary. Also put new seal in front camshaft plug.

    I couldn't find any evidence of leaking injectors or a cracked head. The (what turned out to be) very small amount of fuel in the oil I put down to blow by or some other anomaly.

    Also found a blown fuse which was stopping the ECU from talking to all the other bits and wouldn't let me clear the faults, changed fuse all good. For those reading this with a D2 it was under the bonnet, 30A fuse, last on the right (looking from the RH guard) shown as engine with lightning bolt, I think.

    What fixed it? I don't know. Probably could have got away with CAS and FPR.

    I'll just keep an eye on it for now and see how it goes over the next few weeks. Did about 130 kms in it today, I'm pretty confident it's fixed.
