I have only pulled gear box and T cases from D1 and Defenders

Removing fan/ shroud and top hoses as mentioned above let’s the drivetrain tilt downwards.

If you have access to a known good running lower Km R380 now is definitely the time to swap it out!

Interesting job converting an auto to a manual box!
A lot more involved than a simple change from Johns higher klm auto box to the lower klm version he's contemplating.

    Hahahah
    Ooops
I had assumed John had a manual
Indeed I would never bother converting
But being a ZF box of magic tricks means one thing John

    Find a good ZF magician
Pay them to yoink and overhaul the box of magic and then install the new tcase instead of old

No extra labour and not too many home spanner spinners are going to strip and rebuild an auto? So you’d be up for that cost anyways

The thought had occurred to me actually. There’s a trans shop not far from me, although they’re ZF experts I’m sure that they’d get the job done quicker and easier than me for a couple of hours labor.

How do I set the intermediate gear preload? This is how the manual explains:

I called a local LR shop & the mechanic said that he does it by hand. The shop ist interested in tightening 1 nut for $10. Do I just tighten it until the intermediate gears don’t move sideways (left and right in the below photo) any more then an another 1/8 of a turn?

Thanks for the reply. I ended up deciding to pay PCB to install it, it’s booked in for a couple of weeks time. Peter is going to do the intermediate gears as it’ll take him 3 minutes.

I use Main North Automatics & Driveline in Blair Athol SA.

They are ZF specialists for the gearbox and as it works out intermit knowledge of the LT230 as well.

Got them to rebuild my transfer case and put in my ATB, all drive in drive out.

    Great guys to deal with.
