    Sudden loss of brakes

    Hi all,
This afternoon driving home in traffic, went to slow down for roundabout, pedal goes to floor and retardation minimal, was only a few hundred metres from home luckily. Feels like master cylinder piston stuck, very little resistance at pedal. Master cylinder is relatively new (replaced because original was leaking between plastic reservoir and cylinder) Nanocom shows no faults in SLABs, power bleed seems to work ok. Did feel like the little braking there was was pulling to one side like only one diagonal circuit working.
Can anything to do with ABS unit do this? even though no faults show.
Might have to pull reservoir seals from newer one to put in the original one to get going again. Bummer having to bleed system again though
    Anyone else had this happen?

    Cheers
    Tom

IF there are No leaks in the system then I would say that you still have air in the system, give it another Good bleed and try again

Why would it get air the system when nothing has been touched and all has been working fine for nearly one year since master cylinder fitted?

If it has all gone south after a year then you either have a leak somewhere or you have you have some other problem.
I have had my D2a now for more than 4 years and all I have replaced is the rotors/pads (upgraded to DBA heavy duty slotted rotors/pads) and have flushed the brake fluid and the braking is now Amazing compared to the stock system.
IF you can't solve this take it to a bake specialist and get it sorted, Nearly 3t of 4WD with an auto box and just a flimsy park brake is nearly impossible to stop if you really have to.

I bought a replacement TRW MC off EBay and hsd exactly the same happen but towing a horse float😲 It was sent back and found that the rubber seals had for some reason swelled and failed internally.

Thank gawd for Pay Pal I eventually got my money back...the supplier blamed me but I never touched the unit and the correct fluid was used. TRW never responded to my enquires re any production faults and eg where it was made...but from the packaging I suspect the PRC....

    Soooo...maybe a defective unit??

I have had this one since 2015 when it had 32000km on the clock and like it just came from showroom floor, still only just over 80,000 now. Service history in 11 years and 32,000 unknown, hence now 4.6.
There are no visible leaks, no loss of fluid, rotors and pads are good. This does not give me much faith in dual circuit systems, but until the cause is established I can't lay blame.
I am inclined to think that the floating piston in the master cylinder has seized.
Yeah, tis interesting trying to stop it

Until I find anything different, that is what I am inclined to think.

Not too familiar with the D2 but. I would make some blanking fittings for the brake lines at the master cylinder so you can test it independently. Bleed the brakes remove lines and fit plugs in place. I theory you should have a rock hard pedal.

We took our MC off...pretty easy job..and bench tested it...soon saw that one circuit was not pumping at all..so sent it back ASAP. Put a loaner unit on and problem resolved.

Blocking off the pipes eg at the abs unit...would achieve the same test and eliminate or confirm the MC as the cause.

Of course as noted checking for leaks elsewhere would be essential first.

Have swapped master cylinders and bled system, now back to normal. The replacement unbranded cylinder I removed didn't seem to pump from the front (secondary circuit) section so I suspect swollen cups.
The original cylinder was removed because of leak between plastic tank and cylinder, so before I refitted it I removed the tank to see what seals are used and thought that if I put an O'ring on each of the tank nipples it might squeeze the seals enough to stop the leak. It seems to have worked although I will order a seal kit SJJ100362 in case it starts to leak again
