    Check your cheeps.

2000 td5 auto Disco. Had an intermittent cheap which would come and go with Aircon load. Sounds like a idler / tensioner bearing to me wrong. I passed this car onto a mate and called around Sunday to have a catch up. Asked how the car was running ? I should have known better. Its got a big squeal and rattle says he. I open the bonnet and the first thing I see is the alternator sitting at an angle pointing towards the passengers side. belt still attached i don't no how. Anyway to the tools, you can remove the alternator without removing the manifold but it is a mission and you need flexible arms. Once removal complete discover both ends of the alternator bracket on the block broken of. Diagnosis was that the small top alternator bracket was missing the top hard to see bolt which provided just enough flex in the bottom bracket to eventually snap it off. Luckily I have a wrecker at a mates place and was able to do a rocket run and get bracket of old motor and refit. Car now running like a dream with no cheep. Moral of the story. Look past the obvious and check that bloody small top bolt. Baz

Cheeping while the car is driving can mean the prop-shaft's Cardan joint is on it's way out.
