hi there. you beat me to it john d2. i was about to mention the oil filter as well. :-) regards leak. you don't say where its dripping from underneath car. oil gathers in that spot ( picture ) if leaking from oil filter area or if there's been a recent oil change and nobody cleaned up. it then drips down to lowest part of engine/transmission i.e. join between bell housing and engine. other possibilities :- rocker cover is most common. camshaft plug at back of head is another. either way, 1st step is to degrease everything. let it dry. take it for a run. park it up. chock wheels . get under with a torch. one of the joys of lr ownership. oil recycling :-)))

I havent posted for a while as I had been without Bessie for a week while she was in TRS at Lonsdale getting a number of things repaired.

    So the following were replaced:
    • RHF ABS Sensor.
    • Clock Spring
    • Front Drive Shaft
    • EGR Delete kit
    • Rocker Cover gasket and grommets
    • Fuel injector loom.
    • Cam plug.
    • Exhaust manifold, studs and gasket
    • Main belt tensioner.
    • Front Steering arm w ball joint.
    • Rear drive donut coupling.

All up it cost me $3600 for the repairs which I am not unhappy about.

Yes I probably could have performed a couple of repairs myself, however I decided that while I was getting things done that I knew I wouldnt be able to do myself due to time and or knowledge I decided to get TRS to do those jobs as well.

The difference in the way Bessie drives now to the way she drove before, is incredible.

    A happy camper here,

    Have a good day everyone

    Cheers

    Matt

Sheeite..that's expensive...almost could have bought another disco for that price🙄

But I understand your reasons for going that way..often easier than doing it yourself especially if you r time poor.

Me..I won't pay anyone for any mechanical work anymore...been stung too many times😐

Glad to hear about the improvement tho...even my Patrol mad son who borrowed our Disco Dave admitted..that's a nice easy car to drive Dad.

I'll remind him about that time and time again.

Completed Filter and oil change on the weekend

    Morning everyone.

Just adding to my life with Bessie.

Yesterday I changed the fuel filter, oil filter and centrifugal filter.

Dropped the old oil which was blacker than the darkest night, and refilled with new oil.

While changing the filters I noticed the following:

    turbo pipe leak.jpg

I have read elsewhere on here that this is a common issue and should be a relatively easy fix. I am wondering then if that leak will cause what I am seeing under neath Bessie

    underneath.jpg

Or is that another issue altogether with that pipe?

Also one last question for curiosity...... what is the average life span of a TD5 engine, assuming all the maintenance is kept up with in a timely manner. I currently have 305,000 on the clock.

    Cheers

    November Update.

    Hey everyone.

Just a quick update on what is going on with Bessie at the moment.

There are a number of minor niggles I am faced with at the moment.

    Here is the list:

    • The Windscreen wiper wash water (technical term) is not coming out of the left jet, and only dribbles out of the right jet.
    • The rear passenger window goes down using the switch on the centre console, but wont go back up. However using the switch on the rear passenger door the window goes both up and down.
    • During heavy rain the head lining still gets wet on the passenger side of the window.
    • Have noted in the last couple of days that the coolant level was slightly down. Have topped up and keeping an eye on it.
    • Also found a nice puddle in the Drivers foot coming from the centre console (Have posted a pic below of this.)
    • There is still a slight oil leak coming from the RHS of the engine, however I havent chased this yet, and I have been checking the oil level and havent had to replace any oil (it appears that Bessie isnt losing oil at all, despite the oil leak.)

So have enough to keep me occupied when I get the time. My main worry is the coolant level, which as I said I am keeping an eye on at the moment.

Here is the picture of the leak in the drivers foot well. can anyone suggest where this may have originated from. I have read that it may be blocked aircon overflow pipes would this be accurate?

Hope everyone has a good night.

    Cheers

    Coolant loss.

Definitely the coolant loss is the main item to focus on. This model engine has plastic dowels that IIRC fail and the head to move. You could try throwing in some uv dye to see if its coming out elsewhere. Available on ebay and elsewhere. And you require a uv light to detect the dye.
I had a black growth in my washer bottle. Suspect it was from using tank water. Looked like failing hose at the washer. Bottle needed to be taken out, cleaned and sterilized to kill the mould. And then the one way valves were clogged as well. Hopefully not what's happening to yours.

Checked the coolant level this morning and it hasnt moved from cold from where I topped it up yesterday. So I am going to play the wait and see game on this one. I will however be checking all hoses, including the hidden hose on the weekend when I do the oil and filter change.

In regards to the washer water sprays. Checked the tubing going to the washers this morning and found that the tube had become detached from the passenger side spray jets..... good reason why it wasnt working. Also found that the tubing was split at one of the connectors so will be replacing that on the weekend as well.

Thanks for the advise. It is appreciated.

    Cheers

This is a know issue. see the technical bulletin. water_ingress_to_headliner.pdf

I had a slow leak as well for a couple of years. I couldn't see any leaks. It ended up being a very small leak on the radiator, that was only visible when the fan shroud was removed. This started about 3 months after the head was done. Keep an eye on the levels, just in case.

Aircon drain plug blocked. If you clean from underneath, keep your mouth closed and wear safety goggles

Me too, fan shroud masked where the leak was and it was so small only happened when motor was running and coolant under pressure.

Re Coolant loss, check for moisture around the seam on the coolant overflow bottle.
