Auto box spewing ATF out of the top.
I have started a new thread about the auto box now the engine rebuild is done.
I have just rebuilt my V8 engine. It started first try. After running the engine for a few minutes until the temp gauge came up to normal there was no leaks anywhere. I decided it was time hook up the Nanocom and look at the SLAB problems. But my joy was to be short lived. This time I ran the motor for just a short while and noticed ATF spewing out all over the floor. Not just a drip or dribble but a full run. It appears to be coming from on top of the auto box just above the gearbox mounts and mostly on the right hand side. By dropping the engine to remove the top bell housing bolts have I damaged the seal between the expansion housing or perhaps the transfer case. If that is the case why wait until later to appear. Is there anything else up there that it might be? There doesn't appear to be anyone else on here with a similar problem.

transmission cooler connection to the box? Did you loosen them off?

hi there. i had a similar drama not long ago on a project car. the "o"ring on the fluid outlet pipe had let go. the fitting worked loose and ****ed fluid everywhere.
its where the pipe is connected to the top area of the transmission just behind bellhousing. simple fix . fingers crossed thats the problem. gofer :-)
p.s. mines a td5, but i'm sure transmission connections will be the same.

Just went and bought an extendable mirror witha light. Nothing so far. Guys thanks for input. I'll go and check the places mentioned. The ATF seems to have pretty much dried up over night so I'll start the car again then stop it and put the hoist up and see if I get a better idea. I hope your right I need a simple fix.

This is one for the brains trust. I am perplexed. On top of the gearbox the breathers go back and forth along the box. (See attached drawing) Near the number 3 is an end I have pulled this end down to the side of the box and this is where the ATF oil is coming from. Questions.
1. why do they say the breather goes up to the engine bay when the one from the transfer box does but the one from the gearbox doesn't appear to by the drawing or in practice on my box?
2. Why is there oil squirting out of the breather in a full stream?
3. Why has it occured after working on the engine?
4. What is the fix?

Before you spend any money check the cheap items first, check the fluid level as per guidlines.

Oh believe me I'll be trying for the easy items first as well. Perhaps the air that would have been in the auto oil cooler is some how involved. I changed the radiator and so the cooler was drained.

It is a wonder you cannot see my red face on here. So embarrassing. Despite carefully labelling and I thought double and triple checking by following the pipes I had swapped the hoses to the oil coolers on one side. In my defence the auto hose on one side is plain rubber and on the other has heat sheild covering. And on the other side this is reversed with the engine hose covered in heat shield. Only Land Rover could manage that as both are equelly distant from a heat source. Spent 3 hours trying to remove the stupid so called quick connect plugs. ( Why do you need quick connect plugs as your shouldn't need to remove them in 200,000 kilometres or more.) the plugs were there to stay. I cut the hoses and swapped and then re joined them. Th pipe on the coolers is slightly larger than half inch and the inner hose size is half inch and the pipe at the other end less than half inch so just running a piece of high pressure oil hose with hose clamps is not an option. But problem solved.

So your transmission is full of engine oil?

No PhilipA there may be a little bit but I think they may have been opposing each other as there is a little dark colouring in the ATF I'll drain and refill several times. Interesting as at idle the auto oil pressure is 100 psi and the engine ??? so perhaps the auto cooler doesn't run full auto pressure. Fingers crossed. Might have to order a new auto filter as well. Never changed any gears as it was in park all the time so spread may be limited. There doesn't appear to be anything in the engine either. But again I was going to change it after a short run and have bought the new filter and oil for two changes. The big problem is the so called quick connects that are now leaking profusely on the opposite side. I'll cut the quick connects off and run some more hose directly on to the coolers and close with a hose clamp. One of my factory competition cars has an oil cooler and a stand alone oil filter just using high pressure oil hose and normal clamps. The auto might be a bit more of a problem as it runs up close to 200 PSI though I am not sure they would put that pressure through a cooler core. Mind you who knows with Land Rover they do a lot a strange things. Still if the hose blows off I will be stuck on the side of the road and hopefully no damage. See how it all pans out I guess.
