My 2003-2004 Auto TD5 Disco sometimes takes a few seconds to pull away after starting the engine, when it has been standing for a week.
Once moving, it seems fine, with no hesitation or jerkiness.
Is this initial sluggishness normal, and perhaps due to transmission fluid draining from the torque converter and cooler while the car is idle for days?
Does it indicate insufficient transmission fluid in the transmission circuit?
It drops a very small amount of ATF along with a bit of gear oil from the transfer case.
Or could it be indicating a developing problem with the automatic transmission?
The car has done 226,000 km.
Since I have owned it (5 and-a-half years and 50,000 km), the auto trans filter has been replaced twice.
Draining and replacing ATF (about 5 litres at a time) has been done about 8 times, and the car had a new torque converter when a reconditioned engine was installed 5 years ago.
I have never towed anything with the vehicle, but don't know about prior to that.
I don't want to miss an early warning sign of something major that might develop, and would appreciate advice on this.
Cheers, AndrewMilne
When you say it takes a few seconds to pull away are the revs coming up when accelerating but car not moving or does it seem like no throttle response?
If it's the latter , a defective maf can cause that
If the former and the level is ok then it could be starting to drain fluid back through a defective oil pump O ring or pump
Hi Rob,
Only about 5 litres drained out when the drain plug was removed, as I believe is commonly the case.
Yes, I did have the engine idling while refilling, and did have someone go through the gear positions and then put it in neutral.
Kept filling steadily until it drained out through the filler hole as fast as it went in.
Cheers,
Andrew
Hi Discorevy,
Perhaps I should clarify that this only occurs on first start-up after the car has been standing for a week or at least a few days without being used.
Engine revs come up normally when I press the pedal but it takes a while for the car to move.
It just doesn't seem to want to drive forward for a few seconds.
Once it does, there are no symptoms that I have noticed.
When subsequently pulling away from traffic lights, or parking the car and driving away again hours later - no problem.
Accelerating while in motion does not show any problem.
Cheers,
Andrew
Drain back I’d say.
Happens to mine if I leave it for same amount of time.
As discorevy mentioned.
I just go through the gears if I’ve parked up for a while and away we go!

Me too..brand new re'cod Ashcroft..did it everytime after car was left for a few days..worse if you park it on a side slope. There is no drain back restriction so the pump needs to pick up the oil again etc.
I really wonder why ZF is a chosen supplier given the poor design of their autos .. well early ones at least. .Jatco and Aisin generally are better built..IMHO😎
Handbrake with oil on it sticking until overcome by torque?
Try leaving in park with handbrake off if on a level surface.

my car gets driven twice a week if its lucky, and every time i hop in it, it does this. I believe its just drain back. I just leave it to idle (only needs 30secs) for a bit while putting the kids in and its fine. If i drive it everyday like i do on holidays its doesn't do it and you can start up and drive off.
