anybody tried the cheap diesel in tank fuel pumps?

Looking to keep a spare fuel diesel pump for remote travel with D2 Td5.
I can get supposedly "OEM" version for $400 and freight, or can buy Chinese version on Ebay for $95 with a year warranty.
Has anybody bought one of the Ebay variety, and what sort of outcome with using them?

I have one in my D2 Td5, as when the original gave out I was away. Found a Chinese version and installed it . It is still going strong after 10,000k , but the original did almost 345,000k ! As a spare I would seriously consider it along with a fuel regulator kit for remote travel. With the fuel regulator change the bolts to 13mm head version available from auto stores in those 6 item packs. So much easier to manipulate and work with, as the chance of rounding is absent. Cost about $5. My D2 has had 2 regulators and now again the kit fitted. You can buy a cheap kit or a Bosch regulator and gasket separately, as mostly the housing and hoses are ok.

Dont touch the cheap ones (including the Lucas brand, costs more for same rubbish). I speak from painful experience,Chinese one lasted less than 20K the Lucas one less than 2K. Purchased a VDO (from memory) and still going strong after close to 100K

I reckon John's experience validates the OPs intent. Stated that they want the cheap pump to be a spare for remote travel.
For $95, sure does sound like a plan .... unless if the OP means remote travel that's 20,001 klms from anywhere, of course! In that case you'd want the more expensive genuine stuff.
But just to keep you moving when far from easy access to parts, why would you pay more for a 'spare'.

I've seen the cheap units fail on installation.

As its the lifeblood of your engine you really want it to work and work well.

Buy cheap, buy twice... It only needs to fail out bush once and you're out for the cost of the genuine VDO unit.

If you are really concerned about fuel pump failure, there is only one solution in my opinion. That is to purchase and install a genuine new pump, keeping the old one as a spare.

My mate was sold a cheap one and he found it noisy, after a while he tired of it and fitted a VDO. I also didn't like the single point of failure pump and had an external one fitted, like the ones used on Bowler's. I actually rang Drew Bowler for the details, he was very helpful, a nice guy, unfortunately he has passed away now. The install cost approx. $7-800 in parts and another $7-800 in labour, call it $1500 total. The external pump also became noisy, making a whine when I test ran it every so often, I discovered that I could just use it for priming, then switch it off, as the cam driven injectors would suck the fuel through the pump, had to keep the rev's up though, which I found was quite fun, as involved more driving skill. I also had a hose clip blow off this back up arrangement, and eventually sourced a special fitting via Pirtek, from another nice experienced guy that knew his stuff. That branch has closed/moved now and I think he retired.

    Cheers,

    options for diersel pumps

I like the option of an external pump, it is getting an external pump that will push diesel is the issue.
Am fitting a pump back in tank at present and they can be pigs to hold down and screw that lock ring back on.
Old pump is noisy, so that will be my road spare, and hopefully new VDO will give reasonable life in tank.
