    Replacing Oil cooler gasket

    Morning everyone.

I am getting everything together to replace the oil cooler gasket next month while I am on holidays from work.

I have been reading up on rave the process to dismantle everything to get to the oil cooler so I am going to replace all associated O-Rings and gaskets while removing the turbo, and filters etc.

Has anyone completed this process in the past, and are there any gotchas that I may need to be aware of while I am pulling down that side of the engine. Am I able to complete the process with the engine still in the bay as I do not have access to an engine hoist?

I am looking at performing this over a 2 or 3 day period and just taking my time to ensure that I get it right the first time.

    Cheers

    Matt

I did mine last week. Engine stays put, it's all easily got at. Hopefully your housing assembly is in better condition than mine was....Replacing Oil cooler gasket
I undid the return pipe from the centrifugal filter, from the sump and wriggled it up as one assembly rather than mess around undoing the bolts under it. Dunno if that's the official method. Make sure you drain all the coolant, as you will end up with coolant in your oil/sump as you pry off the cooler housing...

Done mine, thought i had a leaky water pump but was the cooler leaking at the front and weeping down behind the bracket. They seem to corrode at the front of the housing. Don't forget a new little hose for the right hand side. Not a bad job to do and satisfying at the end knowing you've done it yourself! Good luck.

    Thanks guys for the response.

I am feeling a lot more confident about doing the job now.

One question though.... as well as draining the coolant, do I also need to drain the oil?

    Cheers

no , change the oil / filters after doing the job and taking it for a run / recheck.
You will still get coolant coming out of the block unless you drain that as well , just block off the oil galleries as soon as you remove the oil cooler housing.
If your centrifugal filter housing has stripped threads it is a good time to repair while off
Also check that the turbo oil return flange is true and if not , remove and file it flat if you don't want oil leaks on re-assembly

Ok just making a game plan for the replacement of the oil cooler gasket and continuing to get the parts required together before the Christmas break when I will be doing the repair.

I am thinking that I will also replace the turbo cartridge while I have the turbo pulled out (as per rave instructions).

Looks like its going to be a few interesting days for me

    Cheers

There are enough things that can possibly go wrong if one stuffs up the oil cooler gasket/housing job. So,
Maybe leave the turbo for another time!!!! Changing the turbo is a ten minute job compared to what you're about to do.
Just keep it simple mate!!! One job at a time!!
