    Question Automatic transmission (AT) overheating - Discovery 2, 1999, v8, 4.0

    Hello,

    I have LR Discovery 2, 1999, v8, 4.0

I would like to add an additional automatic transmission cooler.

With long climbs in the mountains automatic gearbox heats up a lot. I'm sure the sensor is fine, it works well.
I have a second sensor that is connected to the oil line. This sensor measures the temperature to an accuracy of 0.1 degree. This sensor indicates the exact oil temperature at AT. I try not to exceed 105 degrees Celsius.

I often change the oil, last around 2000 km ago.

Did any of you add extra cooler to the automatic transmission?

    105? Nothing to worry about.

I would be thinking your sensor is due a replacement. 105 degrees on the auto is not too hot. And Disco 2's have a really nice tranny cooler. Check that your tranny cooler isn't chocked with dirt or bugs. What oil are you running in your auto? Synthetic oils are good up to about 160.

I know I'll get some haters but my L322 with a 5hp24 runns normally at anywhere between 115 (engine temp) and 140 (cooling mode with a trailer).

Run good oil ( I recommend Valvoline Max Life ATF by the 20L from Supercheap at $185) and don't sweat it.

    This shows the second cooler,
I tow a 19' caravan, I also have a trans cooler thermostat that keeps the LR system at 80 degrees,, after 80 the coolant goes through the second cooler..
The PWR cooler was the biggest i could buy, half inch tubing means no pressure drop ( hopefully)..

I put the cooler all the way at the front to maxumise the airflow around it/into the rad
