Thanks everyone - it's cleared up a few things for me. I'll go for a bit of a drive tomorrow and really take note of what it's doing. The auto specialist reckons that it's behaving as it should so I'm happy with that. It'll be interesting to see how it goes over the Adelaide Hills in April with nearly two tonnes of camper. When I asked the auto specialist about that he told me to put it in 3 sport mode and let it work itself out but others have said to just leave it in normal mode 4th and just let it work it all out.

Sound in wind and limb is an expression borrowed from English horse racing meaning completely healthy in all respects.

Towing advice is not to overheat the box. Select third gear below 80 kph.

If you have an EGT gauge drive by that, and keep under 700c but towinG 2 tonnes I would be in second over 3000rpm or third locked if not so steep.
I was surprised recently when I towed my daughters Campomatic which my guess weighs about 1400kg up Mona Vale Hill.
Towing my 900 kg Campomatic. I could easily tow 3 locked at under 700 but the EGTs shot up very quickly. I had to drop to 2nd to keep EGTs down even though plenty of power in 3rd.

IMHO EGTs can rise very quickly while towinG and the incidence of warped exhaust manifolds supports this.

In my manual that was my usual tactic whether towing or not. If it was sufficiently steep, somewhere between 3000 and 3500 the car seemed to feel less "stressed" than it did in the next gear up at about 2500.


I don't have an EGT guage - I just rely on keeping the revs up around 3 to 3.5k RPM if the going bets a bit hard. I'm more concerned with keeping the gearbox as cool as possible even though it has a bigger cooler than standard. It seems that the same high revs tactic is the go.

That's what killed mine. A seperate cooler would be a smart investment.

OK, a bigger seperate cooler[bigwhistle]. Also, a sump extension. The things don't hold enough oil IMO. The ZF 4HP22 was intended for cars like the 5 or 7 series Beemers of the time.

I'd suggest your tranny wasn't being maintained correctly, if you believe that's what's finally killed it....
