Thread: Why isn't Eaton torque biassing diff more popular

    Thanks Red90. I'm particularly interested as I purchased my Ashcroft Transmission ATB's in late 2013 and have always felt over the time (7 years/100,000km) that their performance was degrading and they were not working as well as they used to anymore...
    I've recently removed the rear one and replaced it with an Eaton Detroit Locker seeking more positive traction.
    While doing this I also replaced the diff oil. I had been using Penrite ProGear with is fully synthetic and has the slip additives for the conventional LSDs. Replacing with the standard Penrite mineral Gear Oil, which doesn't contain the LSD additives, immediately improved the front ATB effectiveness.
    Mine - modified MY03 LT L318 Discovery 2a HSE Td5 15P
    Hers - MY12 L319 Discovery 4 2.7L TDV6
    Dads - MY12 L319 Discovery 4 2.7L TDV6
    Sister-in-laws - MY98 LJ Discovery ES 3.9L V8

    A quick Google found a few re-branded torque biasing diffs having cracked Belleville washers.
    Possibly the same manufacturer?

    Possible. I had always assumed that Ashcroft produced in house but now that I consider it I have no basis for that.

    I see OBX is one of the brands that seem to suffer from the cracked belleville washers. In my experience, they generally make inferior quality versions of a variety of performance parts aimed towards the Japanese vehicle scene.

    Building a ATB in house is a pretty big manufacturing operation, especially for a transmission rebuilder and especially at the price that they do them for. I'm pretty sure they outsource manufacturing for things like axles and CV's which I believe are made by RCV in the USA for example, so if something like that is being outsourced, I would guess that the ATB's are also. I don't know this though. That said, they do some pretty cool stuff and great development work like their low pinion diffs etc.
