    D2 Rear Diff Housing Thread Stripped (axle)

    When cleaning housing threads before replacing rear diff, noted 2 were cross threaded. Used tap to clean up and have some thread but thinking of putting in studs rather than bolt in (studs can be put in with red loctite cleanly) as opposes to trying bolt it in whilst keeping diff in place. Alternately try find stud that I can screw in from inside case (would be excellent). Has anyone had experience with stripped housing thread? Anyone try include studs in casing (like in D1)? Can the D2 casing accept the D1 studs (these studs don't have thread up to head so hole might need modification)? I think helicoil would be less superior option than trying studs (not sure if enough meat in it), anybody tried helicoil to resolve this issue? Appreciate any input. Thanks, Mort2

    Toyota has a stud elimation kit with one advertisment noting the inclusion of grade 10.9 button head bolts which are screwed from inside case. The nuts provided are stated to be a lower grade. I've yet to see similar kits for the D2?

    The D1 studs are empirical and is a 9.5mm versus 10mm bolt diameter of D2 (not sure if change would cause the diff to sit .25mm lower and cause a problem). I don't have the knurl diameter (ribbed bit) of D1 stud or hole requirement to push in, the existing hole might be too big to make it viable?

    I'm aware you can swap diffs between D1 and D2...is anybody aware if the housing on the axle receiving the Diff is exactly the same between the D1 and D2 (bar the differences in the holes)?

    So if I had a D1 stud to measure my 9.5mm would for sure have been empirical. By the way the Toyota stud replacement kit appears to use a Grade 8 Nylock nut. That's not empirical, just read off the advertisment.
