    ATF?

My auto trans is being removed to replace the flex plate, so the fluid will have to be replaced. Last time I had the trans serviced I specified Penrite.
I want to replace the fluid with the same, but looking on the Penrite website there are two options for Dex ll/lll, semi and full synthetic. Are they compatible and how much will I need?

Go the full syn Ian (ATF-FS Multi vehicle) it's a little more robust/longer lived and you'll need 9+ litres for a full fill.
They are compatible with each other.

    Dont use stock Dex III...

the synthetic D III lasts better but still isnt right for the ZF in the D2. (its ok if you do regular partial changes)

IIRC its tranzmax Z or equivelent that was you best bang for buck in terms of overall life of the oil

I second Transmax Z and it is approved by ZF.

You cannot get a better recommendation than being on the approved list by the transmission manufacturer.

I use it even though I grimace at the $95 for 4 litres. Still cheap insurance.

I've found Castrol Transmax Z very hard to source the past few years. I notice that Autobarn still have it on their website but Repco and Supercheap Auto don't stock it any more.

The Penrite equivalent seems much easier to source. It's been a few years since I changed from Transmax Z to Penrite but have not noticed any negatives so far on a 300,000km old transmission.

While I agree that the manufacturer recommending the fluid is certainly preferred. I do wonder what costs are involved for brands to get that approval and if there are any special relationships that block out other manufacturers for being able to?

The other good thing about TransmaxZ is it works in the PS and ACE,,
and the Penrite PAS fluid is not cheap..

I did not know that. looking in the Castrol Lubeguide they certainly don't promote it either as under Powersteering they only have the following note:

    Note
    • Land Rover PAS Fluid 14315 is recommended for the PAS/ACE reservoir. Refer to Dealer.
Given the price on parts for the PAS and ACE system I'd be careful risking it.
