When i got my Disco 2 td5 1999 checked i was told use pink or red, and i have had no problems so far and its done 320000 ks
But others with a lot more experience than me will keep you right with good advice
I happened to own 3 of D2 TD5 until now, and one was a D2 TD5 2000 Auto (no badge) 7 seats with only 130k kms on clock (sold, then regret and buy back 2 more ), now 2 of D2A one of Manual 03 and one of HSE Auto 04.
I found that the 2000 and 2004 both of them use the same PINK coolant which is common to me (well, my Landcruiser before using the same pink coolant).
However, my D2a 03 Manual is using Green coolant which I will now have to spare a green can for any trip (just in case of emergency if ever happens).
Could someone please help me to understand why did LR change this? or this was changed by previous owner without knowing the right coolant for their car until it came to me?
BTW, none of my D2a have any small issue with overheated thing or leaking, and thermal temp is always in the good range.
Thanks for your time.
James

Just us the OAT coolant what LR specifies and the color is just dye
03 D2a Manual Td5 Modified, Ashcroft lockers F&R, Ashcroft R380,Atb lt230, Ashcroft Rear axles, AS manual IC, AS exhuast manifold, AS Coolant bottle, 3inch exhaust, alive GTB550 VGT, billies 7100s, 3inch lift, 4inch staino snorkel, 35s beadlocked
The colour is not necessarily indicative of the type.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
When mechanics do a job where they open the cooling system in my experience they just fill it with whatever is to hand , usually green ethylene glycol coolant.
The panel beater did it to my Honda Jazz which is factory fitted with blue 10 year coolant.GRRRR. Luckily I had bought 4 litres just before the accident so I flushed and replaced the green with blue.
The Red OAT coolant has a much longer service life than green , but will leak all over the place at first but it eventually settles down.
My understanding is that the EEC mandated red long life coolant to reduce waste in the environment, much the same as they increased oil change intervals and banned spin on filters.

OAT and HOAT coolants also have better heat transfer coefficients than silicate based coolant, don't suffer silicate dropout and are kinder to pump seals as they don't contain or have much lower levels of borates and nitrates.
Silicate dropout is crap, it blocks passages up in blocks.
That's why you need alkali based cleaners and reverse flushing to move old coolant if not changed frequently.
Aaaaaaaaaand the reason the V8's got that red crap was stock rationalization,, only need to stock ONE coolant.
also why they went to "filled for life" in later models. dont need to stock any! its all just money.

100%. The colour is just a dye that the manufacturer chose to put in.
According to the Penrite Lube Guide, the correct coolant from their range for the Td5 is their blue one (it's still an OAT) BLUE OEM COOLANT CONCENTRATE | Penrite Oil while they also have a red coloured OAT the blue one is silicate free in addition. Rick130 has explained above why being silicate free is a good thing.
Mixing coolants and brands can also be bad - even if they are the same colour! There are some 'universal' coolant top up offerings that can apparently be mixed with other brands/types though.

I bought one can from Supercheap Auto today a 4L premixed can. Top up the coolant as I broke the plastic pipe on the top of the radiator when doing something with MAF and air box area (had to fix the connection with a new 6mm hose) and lost about half a litter yesterday.
I like HOAT as a good compromise in the D2. This time I went with Penrite HOAT 7 year and they use green dye for that one.
Cheers
