Shockers again.... rebuild fox shockers or buy new Bilstein 994, 995

So I need help to make my mind up here. I'm wanting to change my terrafirma shocks on my D2 as they are just to firm. I bought some fox shocks second hand awhile back. I fitted the rears up but they were just to soft. I could literally push the back down and they would bounce. I have SLS as well with a 2 inch lift. I have attached a picture of them for reference.

My questions are.... are they able to be revalved? How much would it cost and who can do them? There looks to be a knob on the bottom of the shocker. Is this for adjustment or something else?

Or would I be better off buying the Bilstein 994 front and 995 rear. I think they are $220 each from Les Richmond Automotive. Any help or info would be great. Or even some feedback on the Bilsteins.

    Thanks
    Chris

Give the knobs on the bottom of the remote canister a twist. If they click around it is probably a shock rate adjustment. You may find they are just clicked down as soft as they will go. They're an expensive shock.

Those Fox shocks, running in good order with the right valving to suit, are likely a superior setup for you than the Bilsteins would be. In saying that, the Bilsteins are great and would certainly be far superior to your current Terrafirmas...
The cost of rebuilding and revalving the Fox would likely be equal to or greater than new Bilsteins.

The knob on the remote canisters of the Fox shocks will likely adjust the firmness of them - adjusting this will likely resolve your current concerns with them. Be careful though, often there is not a hard stop both ways and using them when adjusted out of their adjustment range can cause damage. For example, Tein adjustable suspension has 16 settings, if you then adjust it to 17 clicks and drive you can internally damage the shock. It may therefore be worth having a play with it off the vehicle - you should hopefully find one direction has a hard stop - usually this is the limit of the hard setting and usually found turning clockwise. When turning count the clicks so that you have a reference to return back to where you were if needed. Most shocks usually have 8 - 16 adjustments, some fancy ones have up to 32 though - you should therefore find the hard stop within 16 clicks - any more than 32 and I'd be worried and go back.
Might be worth finding the model specifics of the Fox shocks and getting a copy of their manual to find the above details in accuracy from the manufacturer.

O, and give them a clean up. Maybe even do that before you start playing...

Thanks for the replies. I was in two minds whether to use them or buy new. I'll try adjusting the settings tonight and see if that makes a difference. I have tried to find some info on the web about them but nothing seems to come up for those specific shockers. I'll give them a clean up and see if there is a part number to use as a reference.

The knob on the can will only adjust low speed bump, if you're rear continues to bounce after hitting a bump or pushing the rear down, that's rebound and they'll need to be re-valved

From what I remember when I fitted them up they were very easy to push down. Not much effort was needed. I"ll adjust the knob and see if it helps with the low speed bump.

Sounds like no gas pressure, they should have 200psi of nitro in them.
Without nitrogen they won't work too well, the floating piston in the can needs to be putting pressure on the oil for it to flow through the low speed stack in the can and the piston properly.

Ok.... so it's not actually an adjuster. It's just a cap to protect the valve. Exactly like a tyre valve on a rim. So my next question would be, what do they pump in to the valve? Nitrogen? Air? And would that then firm up the shocker a bit?

    Cheers

    Nitrogen, IIRC Fox use 200psi.

It should have some resistance to being compressed, and then will extend quite smartly.
Bisteins use I think 360psi from memory and are bloody hard to compress.

Gas pressure adds a little to bump valving, or more precisely adds to stiction.
Once that initial force to overcome gas pressure is passed, bump isn't really affected.
