    D2 overheating

    Hey team,

Over the weekend i replaced the centre silencer pipe with a terrafirma straight pipe and love the new note of my disco. However 15 minutes into a late drive last night I was receiving no response up a hill, downshifted and still nothing... Then i notice the temp gauge at the top pulled over and let her cool down, which i had to do a couple of times before arriving home.

Any thoughts/ideas? Seems coincidental after fitting the replacement pipe.

    Discovery 2 td5 2001 manual.

    Cheers, Dan.

Have you checked coolant level, looked for bubbles in the coolant tank, when was the radiator flushed last, what mileage / model td5 (plastic dowel pins), nothing blocking airflow.
Just a few things to start with.

If the temp gauge went into the red you probably cooked the head already

    Pure unfortunate coincidence.

Follow suggestions to check for head gasket failure.

I agree. The overheating happening after the new pipe install seems coincidental, unless other parts of the engine were changed during the install?

My head gasket was leaking for months before a particular overheating event (temp gauge in the red) caused the cooling system no longer cooling enough to drive.
The "no response up a hill" could be the engine limiting itself due to high temperature. It happened to me when the temp gauge went into the red zone (unfortunately it doesn't prevent any head gasket damage).

    overheat

There is a fair chance that it is the head gasket especially if you were going up a hill . check the coolant level and if low refill and bleed ,if it drives around ok while on flat roads and does not over heat it will be the head gasket . I had it happen to me a couple of timed and if you shut it down quick enough and let it cool chances are that the head will be ok . What happens is the head moves slightly as it was originally fitted with plastic locating dowels and when you go up a hill or tow something a bit heavy the boost comes on and pressurizes the cooling system and blows the coolant out . Replace the head gasket with a quality oem kit which includes new head bolts and steel dowels but first get the head checked for cracks and flatness . If you are not familiar with changing cyl heads get somebody who can as it is not an easy job , old holdens take about 1/2 an hour td5 disco at least 1/2 a day to get off .

I'm not sure if the TD5 is the same but my D2 V8 over heated on the ex due to the radiator vent/purge line from the top of the radiator to the header tank on the passenger side under the cover snapped off.

If your radiator is old might be worth a check.
