    Engine idling noise

    Hi all,

I've only recently got my 2002 Discovery 2 Td5 Auto, had a few things replaced like harmonic balancer, drive belt tensioner and fuel pressure regulator.

The engine clacking seems excessively loud but i wouldn't know. I've never owned a td5 before so i'm not sure how they should sound but thought i'd run it by the people here, let me know if it sounds normal or not.

You can especially here it at the end away from the front. I've stuck my hand in there, tried wiggling around all the pulleys, fans, holding down all the shrouds but they're all fine.

    Cheers

Hard to tell but sounds like an exhaust leak from the manifold. Have a look if there is any black soot or snapped bolts.

I should have mentioned that the clacking/rattling stops entirely when the accelerator is used. I think when it's idling it's just vibrating the most at the lowest frequency so that's when you hear it.

The exhaust manifold is warped and causes a high pitch noise when accelerating but don't think that's the cause of this noise because if that was the case, it should keep going when the accelerator is used right?

Noise is a difficult thing to diagnose. I would imagine, it is possible for a manifold leak to sound different at different engine operating speeds (idle and moving).
Is there any other symptoms that cause be related?

(Had a rattle I was struggling to find for weeks. turned out to be the zips on the awning while driving :P)

Ha! It definitely sounds like it could be something not so important that's just loose like that but in the engine bay.

As for other symptoms, there's a soft ticking I can hear whilst driving at a relatively low speed. Might be related to the warped exhaust manifold but nothing other than that..

I don't want to scare you too much and I don't know that much about the TD5, but my V8 use to do that because of the flexi plate. I only found out as I had the engine out to do a 4.6 upgrade. Unfortunately you can't see it till pull the engine or gearbox.

That sounds like a real possibility. I can't find the issue now so i'm just going to drive it until something else pops up.

The TD5's make lots of funny noises that sometimes turn out as exhaust manifold leaks,, lots of sound/vids on here that ended up being leaks...

It just sounds like vibration and if it stops when you rev and not get louder then unlikely to be something internal......

Check your engine mounts, the rubber isolators wear out and then all sorts of vibrations happen. I chased an exhaust vibration replacing the whole thing eventually then checked and replaced engine and gearbox mounts. Runs quieter than ever.

Easy way to check engine mounts is with a small screw driver inserted in the small hole of the bottom mount, should go in about 1cm. My rubber was right down on the steel.....

Sometimes if the accessory belt tensioner has not been replaced for a long time the spring will cause a clacking noise.

The engines vary a lot in revs at idle and you can see the tensioner moving backwards and forwards quite easily.
