white smoke and runs on 4 cylinders when cold

    Good morning everybody!

I'm new to the forum, and i'm looking for advice, because not a single mechanic in my city knows what is going on and after half a year i'm kinda getting impatient

    Here is the problem:
i have a 2002 Discovery II td5 prelift with 15p engine with around 280 000kms on the clock. It starts without any problems and idles perfectly, but when i press accelerator pedal when cold and in neutral, it runs only on 4 cylinders and emits ungodly amouts of white smoke (i'm almost certain it is unburnt diesel). There is no power loss at all, and when warm, the engine works fine, only other issue is black smoke which sometimes apears between 1200 and 2000 rpms.

-Every sensor is new and gives believable reading,
-injector balance/correction when idling while cold is 0 at every cylinder,
-there is no diesel in oil,
-i removed the EGR and fitted a pipe without catalitic converter (old one was clogged)
-I cleaned the ECU plug and fitted new wiring loom,
    -Turbocharger is after regeneration
    -fuel consumption seems fine
-All of the hoses from turbo to the intake manifold are in great condition

I was thinking about poor compression on one of the cylinders, but mechanics say that the car wouldn't start that easily if that was the case. Any ideas? I'm seriously considering buying a new engine at this point.

    Cheers!
    Maciej

Have you tried injector cleaner in the fuel?

Only 4 cylinders have glow plugs. How cold is cold? What is the outside temperature? It could be that it is just too cold for the 5th cylinder to fire.

I'd be plugging a Nanocom in and checking the injectors and doing a compression test.

The TD5 starts fine without glowing at around -6° in my experience.

I was thinking, continental climate, very cold in winter. Way below -6C
Mine has started fine in the snow at -5C

Just to clarify...EVERY injector reads ZERO on the injector balance screen?

If so, I think your on the way to finding the problem....

Yes, with minimal deviations (-1 to +1), it works on all cylinders when in idle. What problem do you suggest?

No, not yet at least, my mechanic friend said that it can be risky with unit injectors.

I was thinking about that, but outside temperature is around 25*C, so i don't think thats the problem.

Yesterday I removed all the injectors and checked copper washers and the results are not very clear. There is no indication of leak of any kind on the washers, but there is some kind of brown marks on the injectors and the hole where injectors sit (you can see it on the picture, but it is even more visible in person). there is also some carbon residue on the outside diameter of the hole where the washer is located.
There was also some residue on the tip of the injectors visible on the attached picture, is it acceptable? all of them looked basically the same. Maybe i could soak tips of the injectors in something before i put them back? also, should i apply some kind of lubricant on the injectors before putting them back in the engine?

THank you all for the replies, I'm really grateful!!
And sorry for any grammar errors.

    Cheers, Maciej!!

That’s exactly what injector cleaner is supposed to remove
I would not try and clean them mechanically though.

When you said zero,I thought you meant zero, -1 and +1 are NOT zero.

Now that you have the injectors out you obviously need to fit New washers and O-rings, I'd do that and see what transpires.
